Ranma 1/2: Hard Battle, known as Ranma 1/2: Bakuretsu Rantōhen' in Japan and as just Ranma 1/2 in Europe, is a 2-D fighting video game released by Masaya and DTMC for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. It is based on the manga and anime series Ranma 1/2. Hard Battle is the second Ranma 1/2 game to be translated into English, this time keeping the original graphics, music, and names of the characters, though the voices were still dubbed into English. The game's English translation (but not its English voice acting) was provided by Viz Media (who had begun releasing the English dub of Ranma 1/2 earlier that same year)

Good Qualities

  1. The game is a huge improvement over Chōnai Gekitōhen which had awful gameplay and other horrible flaws, but here it is just a fun simple fighting game.
  2. The graphics are really good because it is detailled and the characters look exactly how they look in the anime series, also the backgrounds are very good and colorful, it is also faithful to the show art style.
    • And unlike the previous game on the SNES, it doesn't look like an 8-bit game and actually look like it belong on the SNES rather than the Master System.
  3. The first (and only) Ranma 1/2 game to be released outside Japan, well if you doesn't count Street Combat which was in reality a reskin of a Ranma game.
  4. Decent controls that are very responsive and are easy to learn despite that you still use a button to jump, but still, you can change the buttons combinaisons if you want unlike the last game, which is cool and cause less problems.
  5. The stories for each characters are good, and feel close to the show, and each of them countain a very funny ending that is mostly the principal that revealed that he manipulated most of the characters but this is done in a funny ways, and instead don't come of as mean-spirited, especially that some of the endings are funny.
  6. Fairly fun gameplay that is very easy to play and was made more simolier so that it is easy to play for those who aren't good in fighting game, but it still had some good combos out there, and the gameplay is somewhat unique.
  7. Decent soundtrack, especially Ryoga theme and the title screen musics, in addition the soundtrack is very catchy.
  8. More characters to choose compared to the previous game, especially because there's now 10 characters to play and there's more opponents to fight, which is great because in the first SNES game you could only play as Ranma in both forms, there's even Happosai who is playable but only if you put a code.
  9. It is faithful to the anime, in fact it is way more faithful than the previous SNES game, mostly because it had more characters and stories that feel similar to the original anime/manga.
  10. The box art for both the Japanese and France versions are very well made and look like the anime it is based on.

Bad Qualities

  1. The english box art is ugly and doesn't ressemble the anime it is based on in any ways, and because of that, the game didn't sell that well in the United States, not helping is that Ranma 1/2 was barely know the time this game was released.
  2. The endings, while good and very funny, are kind of mean-spirited because the principal don't live up to his promess, and because of that, it is a bad ending for the characters.
  3. While it is a fun game, the gameplay is slow, but then again, this depend on your character speed, if it's Ranma in his boy form, then the game play slower but for some reasons if you choose his female form, then he is faster like that so at least not all characters are slow.
  4. It is slighly unbalanced, sometime it is very easy but some opponents (such as Shampoo) are very hard to beat.

Reception

The game received mixed reviews by critics and mixed to positive reviews by gamers, it is often considered to be an improvement over the previous SNES game, and is considered as a decent fighting game for the SNES and a good thing that this Ranma game was released in the United States.

Trivia

  • Given the setting at Furinkan High, and Principal Kuno's importance in the plot, it is odd that Tatewaki does not make an appearance.
  • Gambling King is the only character whom gets his promised reward from the Principal.
