Ranma 1/2 ('らんま1/2, Ranma Nibun-no-Ichi, pronounced Ranma One-Half in English) is a Japanese anime series based off the manga series of the same name by Rumiko Takahashi, being the second adaptation of the manga following the 1989 anime series. It is produced by MAPPA and premiered on Nippon TV on October 6, 2024.
Why It Rocks
- It is very faithful to not only the original anime but also the manga.
- Excellent animation that is a major step up from the 1989 anime animation (which still looks solid and beautiful to this day), as it is very detailed and colorful, and the art style is very impressive even for a 2024 anime.
- The characters also got slightly redesigned and they look just as great, if not better than the original such as Akane and even Ranma, and while some of them don't look as good as in the original, they still look great for that matter.
- The animation is also fluid, as expected from MAPPA studio who always give excellent animation.
- The fight scenes are also very well animated even for a 2024 anime, and because of this, some of them manage to be even better than those of the original.
- The episodes had the same plots as the original but it however get some changes, such as fewer fillers speaking about it, this remake had almost no fillers, which is great considering that most of the 1989 anime was fillers which was what resulted in it being canceled when it didn't even get to adapt all the mangas chapters.
- Great fight scenes that are improved since they manage to be even more fluid and they are fast-paced, and they even got slightly changed for some of those fights.
- The soundtrack is still great and despite not using the original ones and having different tracks, they actually sound great and are catchy to listen to, although not as good as the original.
- The voice acting is decent in the English and Indonesian dub and great in the French dub.
- The English and Indonesian voices despite being different from the original, they are still good and fit the characters, even if they sound worse because it isn't as well chosen.
- The French dub is also surprisingly good despite having weaker voices for some of the characters, most notably the Ranma voice in his female form that doesn't sound quite as good.
- The Japanese, Latin American Spanish, and Brazilian Portuguese dub is the best of them because not only does the original voice cast return, but the voices are just as good as it was in the 1989 anime, which is impressive because of the fact that the cast did fairly age.
- The characters are still likable and aren't flanderized in any way.
- There's still plenty of humor found in this version, even some of the minor things such as a translation to another screen with images of characters, in the same vein as Zig & Sharko (although it was likely unintentional because that show isn't that popular in Japan), or some of the humor from the original version that can be found.
- The new theme song is pretty decent and had amazing visuals, which is to be expected from MAPPA, it also somehow had the same charm as the original show despite being different, and it also shows that they can make a great different song than the original, unlike some other reboot.
- Some of the new characters' designs are good, even if some of them aren't as good, examples include Ranma (both forms), Akane, Genma, and even Kasumi.
- It's great to see a Ramna media after sixteen years, despite not being that new due to being a remake.
Bad Qualities
- While censorship could be a good thing, since the original had a lot of nudity in some episodes, here it had a lot of scenes that are censored, even some of those that aren't nudity, though for the nudity it just nipples that don't show, so in a way censorship doesn't work for this reboot.
- The voice acting, while good, has several flaws:
- The English dub, while good, is disappointingly that they not put the Canadian actor, instead, they replace to Los Angeles actors. Because of it, some older fans can be lost the charm from the original and some voices could be even worse than the Canadian English dub.
- The French dub, while decent, is weak due to weaker voice actors. Some actor are good and some actor either mediocre to bad.
- The animation, while amazing, had fewer charms than the original and it can be divided depending on your opinion, it can also be slightly stiff in some instances.
- The fact that the filler episodes will probably not be adapted, the show might lose some charms too considering that it was one of the few animes to have some of the best fillers ever made, though it is for the best because they we're part of the 1989 anime cancellation.
- The fact that you need to wait one week for a new episode is very annoying, not to mention that even at the launch, they only released one episode, even if the first 12 episodes were leaked online, which means that if they went for the entire manga, we might probably wait more than four years so that the show will end all the chapters, which will make the situation even worse.
- The fact that it isn't a continuation of the original might be jarring for some fans, considering that there's a chance that they will stop even before they adapt all the chapters.
Reception
The remake of Ranma 1/2 received positive reviews by critics and fans of the original, having more than 7.9/10 on IMDb[1] based on 542 ratings, the animation and episodes we're praised as being faithful to the manga but was criticized for the week wait for a new episode to come out.
