Rayman is a side-scrolling platform video game developed and published by Ubisoft as the first installment of the Rayman series. It was originally released in September 1995 for MS-DOS, Windows, Atari Jaguar, Sega Saturn, and Sony PlayStation. In 2000 the game was release on Game Boy Color which this page will cover.
Good Qualities
- Great graphics for a 2000 GBC game and is one of the best looking game on the console easily, because it is very detailled and is extremely colorful.
- The controls are great, since they are tight and responsive and they are rather easy to learn how tu use them, and they are almost the same as the 1995 game, which is impressive.
- Speaking of impressive, the short 3D FMV intro and ending cutscenes are very impressive for Game Boy Color standards since it is like an animation, being pretty similar to the 1999 animated series
- Unlike the console version, it's not necessary to get all the Electoons, which make the game easier to beat, even if they are necessary to get the 100%.
- The game difficulty is much more balanced than in the console versions, and the levels feel more fair, making it a perfect entry for those who want a Rayman game to be balanced and being neither too hard nor too easy.
- A decent replay value because of the 100%, and also it will unlock some new levels if doing so.
- Decent amount of challenge in some later stages, meaning that the game is still challenging but fair as stated in GQ#5.
- While downgraded from the console version boss, you actually get to fight Mr. Dark properly instead of fighting some of the previous bosses, and also his fight is challenging.
Bad Qualities
- The Ubikey is a bit pointless because it's only unlocking time attack levels in Tonic Trouble for the Game Boy Color, which was not a really good game to begin with.
- The music is somewhat ear-bleeding, and because of this, it is hard to like it.
- Some levels are still very frustrating, because of the puzzles being hard to know how to do them.
- In order to continue where you left, you need to enter a long password to play the level where you left. Thankfully, Rayman 2 Forever has a save file.
- Unlike the console version, there are not really any bosses except Mr. Dark.
Reception
The game has a score of 79%/100% on GameRanking.
