Redo of Healer is an anime series produced by TNK based on the namesake light novel/manga written and illustrated by Rui Tsukiyo.
Plot
14-year-old Keyaru was bound by this common knowledge, was exploited again and again by others. One day, he noticed what lay beyond healing magic and was convinced that a healing magician was the strongest class. However, by the time he realized that potential. His party proceeds to betray him and sexually harassed him. After found the magical "healing ring" with almost unlimited power, Keyaru proceeds to exact revenge against those who exploited him.
Why It Can't Heal
- To get the big elephant out of the room. The show is infamous for outright and tasteless rape, showing that Keyaru makes "revenge rape" against his female adversaries, which doesn't change the fact that it's still rape and something that no hero should ever do. It doesn't help that he is underaged, which is considered child pornography.
- The show tried to justify Keyaru's "revenge rape" actions by portraying various female antagonists as sadistic rapists who sexually harassed him.
- Even worse, as with the light novel/manga it was based on, the show uses these rape scenes as fanservice. Worst yet, there are noticeable animation quality improvement of rape scenes over other scenes, as well as large amount of animation technique similar to that of an actual hentai anime.
- Even Berserk, which is known for having just as much gratuitous rape as this series (if not more, ironically), handled it with more maturity and avoided being mean-spirited.
- The writing is ludicrously predictable. The episodes usually begin with Keyaru recalling the episode villain's sexual exploits against him, then showing the villain being extremely evil, before Keyaru defeats them with his overpowered healing power.
- Keyaru/Keyarga himself is a REALLY unlikeable protagonist. He's just a stereotypical Gary Stu that rapes the ones who tortured him instead of killing them, which makes him eviller than the actual villains. He's also an idiot despite the fact that he's supposed to be clever.
- So, Keyaru has been sent back in time and is given the knowledge of the former timeline. He can't avoid being picked up by Flare, so he is destined to eventually head to the castle to be the Healing Hero. He also knows that if he refuses to heal people, Flare will get him addicted to drugs and brutally abused since she'll see him as useless. He also needs to steal skills from those he heals to become powerful enough to enact his revenge. What does he do? He pretends to be traumatized by his first healing experience again and adamantly refuses to heal anyone. Deliberately ensuring that he'll be chained up, drugged, and abused. Even worse, Keyaru says that he was going to get his drug resistance stat up earlier so he could break out of his captivity sooner, but even if that was a skill he felt he needed, he already had a way of doing so without having to have them force-fed to him or being subjected to the other forms of abuse he suffered. Furthermore, if he just went along with healing people, there would be no immediate need to enhance his drug resistance in the first place. He subjected himself to extra amounts of torture for no good reason and never even considered the possibility that he could avoid it.
- During the scene where he's refusing to use his healing, he is offered tea. Tea that he knows is laced with sedatives so Flare can use it to take him to the dungeon. With the knowledge that he's going to be imprisoned and tortured if he drinks tea...he drinks it anyway.
- Horrible and nonsensical worldbuilding that tries to be RPG but fails. With certain elements over the background makes Keyaru be able to easily gain powerful abilities by constantly using drugs. How is he not dead after doing them so much?
- The sex scenes are poorly directed due to the distracting censorship that ends up blurring way too much of the screen. While the censorship is justified because Japan has strict laws regarding sexual content (for example, uncensored nudity can't be shown in "normal" TV channels and genitalia (but not female nipples) are censored in japan), there have been other shows that have done a better job at this that doesn't require blurring most of the screen.
- Appallingly mediocre character designs, with Keyaru being way too similar to Light Yagami from Death Note, and the female characters have unrealistic angles through their nipples.
- Cliffhanger ending: The final episode has Keyaru leaving the Jioral Kingdom searching for more revenge, and it just ends right there.
- Inferior character development: Sometimes, characters are killed without giving them enough time to develop or having almost no characterization.
- Flare/Freya, the "love interest" of Keyaru is a notable example. She was introduced in the first episodes as an extremely sadistic tyrant who sexually abuse Keyaru. Then afterwards being literally turned into his sex slave. Oddly enough, the show's official promotional material often portrays her as a happy girlfriend of Keyaru, and a "cover girl" of the series.
- Some dumb moments, like in Episode 2, where Keyaru uses his Heal power to burn Flare/Freya's palace because he feels glorious after taking another revenge on her for no reason.
- The anime feels like a carbon copy of The Rising of a Shield Hero as both series are set in a Isekai-like RPG world with the main character being considered an "hero" under the quest for revenge with an animal girl sidekick, and even the main antagonist Flare Earlgrande Giorial is a rip-off of Malty Malromarc (being a similarly mean-spirited, "being evil for the sake of evil" character).
- The action scenes are often boring and repetitive, with always ending with the enemies exploding into a bloody mess every time Keyaru touches them.
- Four words: The Dick Slap scene. Enough said.
Healing Qualities
- The animation is very well done.
- Some characters are likable Freya and Setsuna, even though they are stereotypical and sex-obsessed they are still more tolerable than Keyaru.
- Decent soundtrack, with the opening theme being awesome.
- The voice acting is passable.
- At least the series pay homage to the original source material, notably the characters are the same as they are in the light novel/manga.
- The few scenes of consensual sex are sexy.
Reception
Both the anime and light novel/manga were panned due to their writing, characters, and depiction of sexual violence, but unexpectedly, the series received very high viewership in Japan, and in China with the first episode (that was illegally reuploaded to Bilibili) received over 1 million views.
Due to public outcry over the theme of the anime, the show was quickly banned after only the first episode in China.
On MyAnimeList, the series currently holds a rating of 6.3/10.
Trivia
- The reason that Kadokawa chose to create an anime adaptation of Redo of Healer was due to it received highest voting score on their poll in 2019, which is a result of a troll campaign by 2ch members.
- The series originally would get a simulcast release with an international dub (similar to Crunchyroll), but on January 14, 2021, one day after the airing of the first episode, publisher German Animoon announced that the simulcast was cancelled as streaming services and channels refused to air the series due to its controversial themes.
- For some reason, the Dick Slap scene somehow managed to become an Internet Meme.
