Remington Big Buck Trophy Hunt is a first-person-shooter hunting game developed by Stellar Stone (who later made Big Rigs: Over the Road Racing) and published by GameMill Publishing in 2002.
Gameplay
The player, as a hunter, needs to go out in various forests and hunt a limited number of deer. If you kill more deer than the game requires you to, the game is over.
Why It Sucks
- Very monotonous and shallow gameplay. The only thing you need to do is to roam around and kill a certain number of deer. The game lets you choose your equipment, but there are barely any differences between one piece of equipment and the other.
- Other than killing more deer than you're allowed, there are no ways to lose the game.
- The game has a lot of typos. For instance, the introduction says "Don't rely on you your gun's safety" and later spells "when" as "whtn" and "pulled" as "puled". When you kill more deer than you need to, the game cuts to a screen stating "You exceed killing quota".
- Very poor options: there are three parameters associated to the game's difficulty which barely affect the core gameplay (Deer AI, Deer Population and Deer Sensitivity) and a few graphics options. However, there is no way to change the mouse sensitivity, remap the horrible controls or edit your walking speed.
- The "Y" letter glitches up in the options menu.
- Very bad controls. You can't perform basic actions such as jumping or aiming, and you need to press the F1-F6 buttons to swap items.
- Most of the items do nothing at best and harm you at worst. Binoculars don't actually make you look further, but they only reduce your field of view, the scent used to attract deer does almost nothing because it doesn't always attract the deer near where you left it, and you can't aim with scoped weapons.
- The playing character moves way too slow and the sprint barely does anything to help you catch up with the deer. The fact that the deer will always be very far away from you doesn't help. Also, when you manage to aim at a deer, your sight lights up, but it does so every single time the target is in your sights, regardless of whether it's in your field of view or if there is something between you and the target.
- The trees look like they have been made with cardboard and are just the same two to three models copied and pasted all over the map. Also, the logs have the wrong shape.
- There is no reload button: the only way to reload your gun is to wait for your clip to empty, which can cause problems if there is a deer near you.
- There is no music, just some poor and generic sound effects.
- Terrible graphics and texture quality:
- The game, in fact, runs on literally the same engine used in Big Rigs and Midnight Race Club: Supercharged!
- The tents look like they have been made with rusty iron;
- The grass looks like a swamp when looked at from afar;
- The playing cards in the tents appear and disappear.
