Resident Evil Survivor (known as Biohazard Gun Survivor in Asia) is a light gun shooter video game developed by TOSE and published by Capcom. It was released for the PlayStation in 2000. It was ported to Microsoft Windows in 2002 and is available only in China and Taiwan.

Why It Doesn't Survive

  1. Poor controls. It's hard to move your character and even shoot the zombies. This is because the game retains the series' tank controls despite being in first person. To add insult to injury, American versions of the game have no GunCon support (whereas the other versions do) as a result of the controversy surrounding the Columbine massacre.
  2. The graphics are really ugly and terrible, especially by 2000 standards. The designs are flat and boring to see, the color palette is washed-out and hideous to see and the faces are laughable and lifeless.
  3. Cheesy and somewhat boring voice acting, unlike Resident Evil 1's where the voice acting is funny and hilarious, even though it was supposed to be dramatic.
  4. Very simple puzzles.
  5. The Windows version was released only in Taiwan for some reason. It is also almost unplayable due to various glitches.
  6. The game can be finished in less than an hour. While this could be excusable since most RE games are short and can be beaten in less time by trying to speedrun, most are more than 3 hours long, but this game can be beaten in the aforementioned time without trying to speedrun.
  7. Asset flip: All the enemies, except for the final boss (Hypnos-T Type) and Under Takers, are taken from Resident Evil 2 without any changes, even zombies. There are also enemies taken from Resident Evil like Black Tiger and the Hunters.
  8. The Under Takers are really weak and don't really fit into the story. They can be killed with 1-2 shots, and they make jaguar noises for some reason.
  9. There is no ability to save the game, so you have to finish it in one run (which explains why the game is so short). Instead, there is some sort of a "checkpoint system". What makes it even more problematic is that you have only three continues and when all of them are gone it's a game over.
  10. Poor animation that's laughable and at times makes the characters seem like robots.
  11. Bad musical score.
  12. Boss fights are very easy.
  13. The game is easy as enemies are pretty weak and can be killed with only a couple of shots this even includes enemies that are supposed to be stronger like the Hunters and Tyrants.
  14. Extremely inconsistent collision detection.
  15. Just like Ethan in Resident Evil 7, Ark is a pretty generic character. In fact, all the characters are forgettable and generic.
  16. The intro has a lore mistake by claiming that it's Umbrella who nuked Raccoon City, while it's actually a US government who did that.
  17. According to the credits, there was no quality assurance or game testers at all! (No one checked it before it came out basically.)

Redeeming Qualities

  1. Branching paths that allow the players to explore different environments. One of the branching paths changes one of the cutscenes at the end of the game.
  2. Good variety of handguns.
  3. It gives a somewhat interesting backstory about Umbrella.
  4. It has a support Gun controller to simplify controls (JP and EU only).
  5. A first-person Resident Evil game was a neat concept that was poorly executed. Though it was eventually done right with Resident Evil 7: Biohazard.

Trivia

  • An official guidebook released by Capcom strongly suggests the game's plotline is a metaphor for Nazism: Lott and Lilly have been raised hearing supremacist comments from their father, but changed their minds after witnessing him becoming a zombie as any other infected.
