Premise

The teams must look for X's emeralds before X himself does. But when "Team Ice Cube!" finds a buried forest and accidentally causes a lava overflow, they must act fast.

Why It Found X's Emeralds

  1. This is the first multi-parted story since BFDIA 5, and it's just as great, if not better!
  2. As per many episodes, the character interactions are funny and interesting to watch.
  3. Saw FINALLY returns with a brand new handle, and it looks amazing on her!
  4. Firey Jr.'s elimination. Not only was he a massively hated character and deserved this, but he got exactly 10,000 votes to be eliminated, complete with all of the profile pictures of YouTubers that voted for him! Such a random yet funny gag!
  5. The shocked expressions Eraser and Fries make when X suddenly hurdles into the ground.
  6. Golf Ball is a bit more likeable in this episode (except when interacting with Basketball), and her invention, the Mutual Mind Reader, is as cool as any! It also helps her team, A Better Name Than That!, succeed in finding an emerald, along with using the rocket's satellite dish to dig.
  7. We get a hint on what Bell's string may be attached to. It's something giant, according to Golf Ball's MMR when pointed at her. However, Blocky cuts her off.
  8. Ice Cube is also likeable in this episode for standing up to Book and letting her think for herself, as she would be manipulated a lot into doing Book's decisions.
  9. Book finally realizes how unlikeable she has been to her team "8namesatonce/BLEH" and her obsession with believing Taco and Saw have abandoned the team. Pin even confronts her to point these mistakes out, saying she didn't allow them freedom, and explaining to Book that she should do what they want, not what she wants. Then Book decides to be a hero by pushing Taco and Ice Cube out of the lava and on the bathroom roof to safety, showing she is trying to change now.
  10. The lava outbreak is one of the craziest arcs in BFDI history.
  11. Great, memorable, and hilarious quotes:
    • "PLEASE HANG OUT WITH ME!!" - Taco
    • "Fanny, you're back!" "And you're back in one piece!" "NOT MENTALLY!!" - Snowball, Bubble, and Fanny
    • "Get digging, big boy!" "Don't call me big boy!" "Sure thing, big baby!" - Ruby, Snowball
    • "Thunder, lightning, same thing." "It's really not, that would be like calling you 'Shatter Sound'." - Ruby, Lightning
    • "Looks like it's time to get this Book's cover judged." - Lollipop
    • "Nice emeralds, I love a team that commits forgery! Commits for-Dream Island! You really committed to winning Battle For Dream Island." - Four
    • "Dark humor is the way some people cope with tragedy." - Gelatin
    • "Four, want to hear a joke?" "Not really..." "Three!" - Golf Ball, Four
    • "Oh, what a pain!" "Tell me about it!" - Blocky, Robot Flower
  12. The animation continues to be a massive step up compared to earlier BFB episodes, thanks to Cary Huang, since "Don't Dig Straight Down" is the first episode that he animated.
  13. The funny bit of Golf Ball stopping iance from resurfacing by simply being above them continuously and spelling this message with dead grass patches: "HELLO DEAR GOLF BALL, IT IS iance. WE WOULD LIKE TO EMERGE TO THE SURFACE, BUT YOUR PRESENCE IS PREVENTING US FROM DOING SO. WE BELIEVE YOU ARE ACTIVELY TRYING TO POSITION YOURSELF IN THE"
  14. Golf Ball's underground factory returns in this episode since "Zeeky Boogy Doog".
  15. Amazing ending: Woody is escorted to safety by Naily and Cake through the garbage chute in the underground factory, and after falling through some strange dimensions, Woody gets the last emerald for BEEP and wins the contest for them. And "8namesatonce/BLEH" goes up for elimination for the first time in the series, after 12 wins in a row.

Bad Qualities

  1. Many teams took the easy way out in the challenge by simply handing Four the same emerald found by Golf Ball, but technically it's because the challenge was to find an emerald before X did, so they technically did it right.
  2. It took an entire year to release after BFB 12, but at least the storytelling is amazing.
  3. Clock doesn't appear because The Losers! still forgot about him.
  4. There's still unlikeable characters:
    • Four is still unlikeable as he cannot handle any form of criticism, his worst moment in these episodes is when he screeched and swallowed Pillow just for guessing the contest incorrectly.
    • Book is still unlikeable for a majority of "Return of the Rocket Ship", until Gaty pulls her aside near the end.
    • Spongy pulls out his private jet as a means to escape the lava and only uses it for himself as revenge for being mistreated on his team. While that's understandable it isn't justified.

Reception

"Return of the Rocket Ship" has a rating of 8.5 on IMDb based on 89 reviews, making it the 3rd highest-rated BFB episode, and 7th highest-rated episode of the series. "Don't Dig Straight Down" has a rating of 9.5 on IMDb based on 145 reviews, making it the highest-rated BFB episode and BFDI episode of all time.

Trivia

  • The title "Don't Dig Straight Down" is a reference to Minecraft, warning players not to dig straight down incase of falling into lava.
