Richie Rich is a short-lived American sitcom series produced by DreamWorks Animation's AwesomenessTV for Netflix. The show is loosely based upon the Harvey Comics character of the same name, with Jake Brennan playing the eponymous character. However, all of the original characters (except for Richie and Irona) were replaced with a new supporting cast. The first season, consisting of 10 episodes, was released on February 20, 2015. A second season of 11 episodes was released on May 22, 2015.

Plot

Richie Rich is a boy who turned vegetables into a clean energy source. As a result, Rich now has over a trillion dollars. Rich lives with his family in a mansion filled with toys, contraptions, and his best friends Darcy and Murray are always by his side, along with Irona, Rich's robot maid, his dad Cliff, who loves naps and is a bit dense, and his jealous sister Harper. Also, Darcy loves spending money and Murray doesn't want anything out of budget.

Why It's Poor E.Broke

  1. Extremely poor grasp of the original source material: Similar to Scaredy Squirrel and Daybreak, this show is nothing like the comic books, making it look like it is based on nothing as it entirely follows a story of its own!
  2. The main idea about becoming a trillionare by just selling vegetables you do not eat is a horrible idea. It also promotes self-absorption and greed and discourages nutrition.
  3. The series barely follows the comics it was based on such as Richie not having a mom which happened in the comics, while in the TV show, he had a sister which didn't happen in the original source material.
  4. Some of the characters are extremely unlikeable such as Richie himself, Harper, and Darcy.
  5. Bad acting all around.
  6. It ignored the message the original comics and cartoon were trying to say, because in the original comics, despite Richie being born rich, he never acted like normal rich people and loved others, even having Freckles and Pee-Wee (who are poor) in his group of friends; here, the show acts like a wish-fulfillment to its younger audience.
  7. Some characters are also stereotypes such as Richie's dad being a "Stupid Dad" stereotype, Irona is a "French maid/Robot Slave" stereotype (notable because it's supposed to be a kid's show), or Murray being "Jewish/Nerd accountant" stereotype.
  8. The exterior shot of the Rich mansion looks extremely cheap. It basically looks like a large white building with an amusement and water park, which is a very boring and uninteresting idea.
  9. Some of the characters from the comics and other cartoons never made any appearances on this show.

Redeeming Qualities

  1. Some funny scenes here and there.
  2. Murray, despite him being a "Jewish/Nerd accountant" stereotype is one of the only likeable characters in the series.

Reception

Richie Rich received overwhelmingly negative reviews by critics, audience and fans of the comics and the original show. It is considered one of the worst Netflix originals ever made. The show currently holds a 3.3/10 on IMDb and a 1/5 on Common Sense Media. Because of it receiving negative reviews, it was cancelled after 2 seasons.
