RoboCop 2 is a 1990 action game developed by Ocean Software, and based on the 1990 film of the same name.

This page only focus on the NES and Game Boy versions, which we're negatively received.

Gameplay

The game is a fairly standard 2D platformer but had objectives that need to be completed such as taking enough drugs out of the levels and arresting the criminal, if the objectives aren't done, then you can't complete the level.

Why It Cannot Stop The Criminals

  1. The main problem about this game is the objectives, which are enough to ruin this game since not only they are incredibly hard but also they are mostly there to add more length to the game as if they fear that the game is way too short and easy (in which it isn't easy), and yep the game was already short but having these poorly executed objectives just to add length was already bad from the start.
  2. Speaking about the objectives, the main reason why they are very hard is because the drugs are completely hidden and some of the levels places warp are almost impossible to see, and most drugs are in those places, and at such it make the game an absolute nightmare to play because of BQ#3.
    • In fact, if those we're not present and that the game was designed better, then the game would probably be easy, despite the horrible controls.
  3. Terrible controls, the controls in this game are somehow worse than the first NES game and that is because they are horribly clunky, stiff and unresponsive, every moves in this game are downright hard to do even for moves such as jumping, also speaking about the jumps, they are almost impossible to control, which is similar to the Castlevania trilogy on the NES, but at least those games we're designed with it, here howewer the game wasn't designed for the terrible controls and instead come of as an almost unplayable game.
  4. You need 60% of completion to pass a level, which as stated before is incredibly hard to get because not only the level design suck but also taking out the drugs and arresting the criminal is a real challenge in a bad way, and this only ruin the game further, and if you don't complete this objective then you must restart the entire level, fun isn't it ?
  5. Horrible level design, the level design is actually kind of decent in the first level but after that, the levels are horribly designed because it had very artificial difficulty and the platforms placements are just terrible, not to mention that the levels aren't adpated to the awful controls and the enemies placements are also just as horrible, sometime there's even cheap deaths that are often placed in a way you can get them easily and thus make the game extremely hard for no reasons other than terrible game design.
  6. The Game Boy version had a horrible screen crunch that make the game harder due to being hard to see if there's a pit or a platform before you land, and this make the game incredibly frustrating, even more than the NES version, and it can also be hard to see the criminals due to them not being seen on screen because of the screen crunch.
  7. Awful boss fights that are just luck-based, and they simply aren't fun at all, not to mention that they are extremely hard and thus are completely unbalanced in term of difficulty.
    • The reason for this is because they always shoot projectiles that are almost impossible to dodge and thus make them way too hard, especially on the Game Boy version.
  8. The framerate on the Game Boy version is terrible, often goes to 25 FPS and barely 30, this is mostly because that version is slower than the NES version.
  9. The difficulty is completely unbalanced and is even harder than the first NES game which while hard, it was still not as unbalanced and was actually fairly fun, here this game difficulty is mostly based on the horrible controls, objectives and the platforming that is atrocious, also the enemies are poorly placed as stated before, and some of them even kill you in one hit, which is made even worse when you consider that the game idea could have worked if the difficulty and poor designs was better.
  10. No checkpoints, if you die you need to restart the entire level all over again, which is annoying and became very tedious due to how horrible the levels are.
  11. Atrocious ending, while the screen isn't bad to look at, it feel unsatisfying and feel extremely rushed, not to mention that the staffs are all present on only one screen (at least in the NES version), which might hint that the game had a poor development cycle.

Redeeming Qualities

  1. The game is somewhat interesting, and is quite unique for a platform game, though the execution is atrocious.
  2. Decent soundtrack, especially in the NES version.
  3. The graphics are very good for it's time, especially on the NES version, since the sprites are detailed, the graphics are colorful and almost feel like the game could have been on a 16-bit console.
  4. Fortunately there's infinite continues, which is good because if there's would be limited continues, the game would likely be unbeatable.
