Ruled Out is the first episode of season 3 and the 28th episode overall of The Fairly OddParents
Plot
As Timmy is sick and tired of parents' rules just because they are safe for him, he wishes that his parents do not care of him just to have fun; which becomes worse when he is sick, dirty, and careless of rules.
Why It's Ruled Out
- For starters, This is a cruel Timmy torture episode.
- This is an episode where Timmy breaks the rules by not caring with your parents; while it is not a bad thing, it is dangerous.
- Timmy's parents have been flanderized into being controlling parents at the start of the episode, until Timmy's wish causes them to dumbed down to being care-free.
- Poor first impression in which the first one-third of this episode is Timmy getting mistreated.
- At the opening scene, Timmy ignores Mrs. Turner's warning that kicking the ball is too dangerous since she and Mr. Turner are concerned about Timmy's safety, so the former kicks at Mr. Turner instead, causing his face to get hurt, much to Tommy's shock.
- In the next scene, he eats the spinach, despite not wanting too, which is gross; because Mrs. Turner wanted him to eat it since it is good for the colons.
- When Timmy attempts to watch "Sewer Gator" Mr. Turner changed the channel to "Child Block" using his screwdriver because according to Mr. Turner, it is too dangerous to watch.
- All of these would result in students getting humiliated at Timmy due to him saying "They care", resulting in him getting infuriated and wishing that his parents care less.
- Timmy eating candies due to Mrs. Turner's request can be unhealthy in real-life since they can consume more sugar and they will look fat in the later days.
- Mr. Turner playing catch with Mrs Turner could be a dangerous act and it will create massive injuries like broken bones.
- This happens again (albeit offscreen) but this time, Timmy cannot concentrate on his Math quiz tomorrow, which is just sad to poor Timmy.
- 2 weeks later, Timmy becomes gross, unhealthy, and sick this may be the result of him eating too many candies and the lack of proper hygiene.
- Timmy's parents do not even pay the electric bills due to them not caring, which makes them unhealthy as a result when Timmy uses a candle to search for them.
- Mr. Turner is also stupid to recognize that Timmy's goldfishes are his food, when they are his pets, this resulted in throwing and flushing them into the toilet.
- Because of Timmy's parents wanting to care more due to their insecurity, Timmy shouts in front of them, which is mean-spirited.
- Bad Ending: Even if Timmy's parents are clean due to Timmy ignoring them, they suddenly arrest him for 6 weeks in the iron cage, which is just cruel.
- Timmy's parents do not show remorse to what they have done to Timmy, implying that they still treat them horribly due to their controlling behavior.
- Bad Moral: A person wanting to get rid of the rules could be a dangerous idea and they would put them into trouble once they progress.
- It is bad to have lack of hygiene since they would get sick, similar to Down 'n' Dirty from The Powerpuff Girls.
- Karin Gutman did an awful job writing in this episode due to its premise.
- This episode was not a good way to start season 3.
- It gets even worse as the episode shows that it is okay to have poor personal hygiene to stay alive, which got repeated in "Camp Kidney Stinks" from Camp Lazlo. When in reality living with poor personal hygiene is not the right thing to do. Making this episode a rehash of "Scrubbing Down Under" from "Rocko's Modern Life".
Redeeming Qualities
- Good Moral: Rules are provided and they should care about them since they need to be safe too.
- The ending scene where Cosmo and Wanda say to the viewers about the COLONS is a funny scene.
- Despite Timmy's parents being horribly flanderized here, their behavior is justified since they do not want Timmy or his family to get harmed by kicking the ball or watching violent shows and they want him to keep healthy by eating produced foods; which is what they do in real-life since they do not want their siblings to end up creating behavioral issues or pay the medical bills after getting hurt and they want them to keep them healthy to live longer and better.
- This is also the mark of the well beloved Storyboard Director, Dave Thomas, who, despite the weak effort, actually did a good job storyboarding it. He also storyboarded many episodes after this one and they were (if not) improvements.
Trivia
- This is the first episode where Butch Hartman did not direct in this episode.
- This is the first episode of the series where Gary Leroi Gray provides the voice of A.J.
- Until now, Ibrahim Haneef Muhammad voiced this character. This is the only episode where Gray tries to replicate Muhammad's voice.
