Runny Egg is a 2015 platform game developed and published by Tom Create for the Nintendo 3DS as an eShop exclusive. It was released on April 9, 2015 in North America and January 28, 2016 in Europe.

Why It Can Run

  1. The game only costs $1.99 on the Nintendo 3DS eShop, which is pretty underpriced for the game's standards, and better yet, the quality of the game can be considered to be better than that of other games listed for the same price on the eShop.
  2. Extremely tight and responsive controls for the most part, with the gameplay being a little bit inspired by that of Sonic the Hedgehog. Running fast enough allows your egg to spin-dash, moving faster, however, unlike Sonic, you still can't kill enemies while spin-dashing, as the only way you can kill enemies is by collecting 100 chicks and turning invincible.
  3. A very nice and clean 2D art style and graphics, in which it is mixed with 3D cel-shaded character models.
  4. There are "egg recipes" hidden throughout the game that can be obtained by taking damage in several different ways, in which there are nearly 50+ of them to collect.
  5. Collecting 100 chicks allows your egg to actually turn into a chick, making it invincible and also making it able to kill any enemy that it can't in its normal form.
  6. Speaking of the chicks, they can also be used to level up your Egg, making it stronger, durable, or have more health.
  7. All of the levels in the game can be played on a difficulty that best matches the player's skill (Easy, Normal, or Hard), in which the higher the difficulty the level is set on, the more obstacles and enemies there are.
  8. Despite being repetitive, the soundtrack is decent.
  9. There are also "Jumbo Eggs" hidden throughout each stage, in which the player will immediately turn invincible rather than having to collect 100 chicks.
  10. Decent amount of replay value.

Bad Qualities

  1. The game is very short, as it is possible to beat it in about half an hour, due to there only being 16 levels.
  2. Some of the levels can still be hard even when set on the easiest difficulty.
  3. As stated above, you can't kill enemies while spin-dashing. The only way you can kill enemies is by collecting 100 chicks and turning invincible or finding a Jumbo Egg.
  4. Due to the the closure of the 3DS eShop in March 2023, the game might be completely lost to time, as it was only released for the 3DS as an eShop exclusive, with no physical release.
  5. The soundtrack, while decent, is very repetitive, as it's the same song that plays throughout all 16 levels.

Reception

The game received mixed-to-positive reviews on Metacritic[1] via 3 critic reviews.

Nintendo Life[2] gave the game an 8/10.
