Sailor Moon Crystal is a 2014 anime spin-off adaptation of the shōjo manga series Sailor Moon written and illustrated by Naoko Takeuchi and produced in commemoration of the original series' 20th anniversary. It is the second anime adaptation of the manga followed by the original from 1992.
Why It Has Moon Pride
- Much like Dragon Ball Z Kai, this series is a much more faithful adaptation of the manga.
- The pacing is much better in this series (by Season 3).
- The English dub is very good, sharing the same voice actors as the HD remaster dub of the original anime. The English voice actors were chosen by Naoko Takeuchi, creator of the manga and therefore the franchise.
- Unlike in the original Sailor Moon anime, the characters are much closer to how they are portrayed in the manga and there aren't many fillers.
- Great intro and outro songs such as "Moon Pride" by Momoiro Clover Z and "Eternal Eternity" by Junko Minagawa and Sayaka Ohara.
- Unlike the original anime, Chibiusa is actually likable.
- Kotono Mitsuishi reprises her role as Usagi Tsukino/Sailor Moon.
- The new voice actors, Misato Fukuen as Sailor Chibi Moon (Himiko Toga from My Hero Academia), Hisako Kanemoto as Sailor Mercury (Erina Nakiri (Seasons 3-5) from Food Wars! Shokugeki no Soma), Rina Sato as Sailor Mars (Shura Kirigakure from Blue Exorcist), Ami Koshimizu as Sailor Jupiter (Ryuko Matoi from Kill La Kill), Shizuka Ito as Sailor Venus (Irina Jelavic from Assassination Classroom), Kenji Nojima as Tuxedo Mask (Shinsuke Kita from Haikyuu!!), Junko Minagawa as Sailor Uranus (Mereoleona Vermillion from Black Clover), Sayaka Ohara as Sailor Neptune (Erza Scarlet from Fairy Tail), Ai Maeda as Sailor Pluto (Karen Minazuki from Smile PreCure!), and Yukiyo Fujii as Sailor Saturn (Himiko Agari from Komi Can't Communicate) did a great job voicing the main characters.
- Thankfully, the animation improved and gotten a lot more smooth, and fluid.
- And people wished the animation should've stayed as the season 3 art style.
- The artwork is pretty nice.
- The Sailor Senshi actually fight instead of just standing there.
- By Season 3, the transformations and attacks got better with new animation.
- 4 years after the end of Season 3, it spawned a 2-part movie, titled Sailor Moon Eternal, that takes place after the Infinity Arc, which is also faithful to the manga like the first 3 seasons. This made an improvement over the fourth season of 90s anime, which involved a heavy focus on Chibiusa and Pegasus, as well as the absences of the Outer Sailor Guardians and the Amazonnes Quarter not being Sailor Guardians.
Bad Qualities
- When the series was first released, it both looked and felt rushed, giving itself a bad introduction.
- Seasons 1 and 2 were infamous for their poorly-drawn facial expressions and misproportioned body parts, even though they are trying to looks similar to the manga's character artstyle.
- There was an extreme lack of personality from the characters in the first two seasons (until Season 3).
- Unlike the original anime where there is character development, there is no character development apart from Usagi's, so the Usagi design can be little bit ugly look at.
- Even though Kotono Mitsuishi reprises her role as Usagi, it sometimes doesn't feel the same as when she voiced Usagi in the original anime.
- Given the fact that none of the Japanese voice actors from the 90s anime returned to reprise their roles may be irksome to the fans of the original.
- The pacing was bad in the early seasons.
- The CGI transformations looked awful in Seasons 1-2.
