Saint Seiya (Japanese: 聖闘士星矢セイントセイヤ, Hepburn: Seinto Seiya), also known as Saint Seiya: Knights of the Zodiac or simply Knights of the Zodiac (translated from the French title Les Chevaliers du Zodiaque), is a Japanese anime based on the manga series of the same name by Masami Kurumada, produced by Toei Animation. It first premiered on Japan's TV Asahi on October 11, 1986, and continued on until April 1, 1989. The anime premiered in Brazil on September 1, 1994 on Rede Manchete as Os Cavaleiros do Zodíaco, with its first Brazilian dub made first made at São Paulo dubbing studio Marsh Mallow (only in the first 51 episodes) and later at the now defunct dubbing studio Gota Mágica for the rest of the anime.

Why This Dub Needs To Be Stopped By Pegasus Seiya (Bad Qualities)

The dub was based in the Mexican dub, instead of the original Japanese version, which resulted in some problems with the first dub, mainly with the translation errors.
Speaking of the translation errors, it has many questionable and bad translation errors, and it happens a lot in this dub.
Both openings of this first dub, looks like children's songs from that time of Brazilian kid singers and bands (which actually happened with the second opening, sung by the duo Larissa Tassi and William and while for the first opening,it's based on the French dub) which do not fit in a violent fighting anime like Saint Seiya.
It also has constant voice changes in the supporting seiyas, having many voices in episodes they appear. Also, some voice actors voiced more than one character in this dub.
There's a one notable error that happened in this dub. Due to the distributor's request to boost sales of Capricorn's Cloth Myth, they changed the name of Unicorn Jabu to Capricorn Jabu, which was unnecessary the name's change.

Good Qualities

The cast of the main characters was well-chosen and they do a good job, mainly with Hermes Baroli as Pegasus Seiya and Letícia Quinto as Athena.
The second dub made in 2003 at the also defunct São Paulo dubbing studio Álamo, was a improvement over this dub, due for this time being based in the original Japanese version and was better received.
Without this dub, the anime wouldn't be very popular in Brazil to this day and also made people in Brazil start to know about the franchise.

Trivia

The anime was brought in Brazil by Samtoy, a division of Bandai and was first proposed to other Brazilian television networks, but they rejected due to the anime's violence. After many negotiations, Rede Manchete acquired the anime in exchange for airing the company's commercials.
Eduardo Miranda, head of Rede Manchete's cinema division, only approved the airing of the anime on the network after receiving five complete episodes from Samtoy, saying: "They sat me down to watch a 15 minute trailer of the show. The video was exactly like this: blood, violence, suicide attempt, self-harm, a guy gouging out his eyes... Then you think: I have a completely childish programming. How can I give a positive opinion to this?"
