Sandwich Thief is the 14th episode of the 2nd season of Teen Titans Go!.

Synopsis

After his magnificent sandwich goes missing, Robin becomes completely obsessed with finding it. After interrogating the Titans, traveling to the future, and scouring a distant alien world, he finally his perfect sandwich. However, the snack has grown a little sinister during his time away...

Why Its Sandwich Got Stolen

  1. This episode was heavily panned by critics and viewers alike due to its weird and nonsensical plot, Robin’s unlikable attitude, and terrible moral.
  2. In the opening scene, when Robin opens the drawer, he saw that there is no sandwich, shouting "NO!" in progress, which rip-offs Mustache Cream from Uncle Grandpa, where the titular character shouts "NO!" when the line is long in the supermarket.
  3. Cyborg was very rude to Robin at the beginning of the episode as after Robin told the story about how he learned how to make sandwiches (a nice callback to the first episode of the series, The Perfect Sandwich), Cyborg just boredly responds “That’s the longest story about a sandwich I ever had to sit through.” That is very rude and Cyborg should’ve said something better. Also, didn’t he enjoy Robin’s sandwiches?
  4. Afterwards, Robin becomes unlikable, he frantically searches the tower for his sandwich, getting into the Titans’ personal belongings, Beast Boy’s stomach (which is very disgusting), and Cyborg’s brain.
    • Also, Cyborg dressing up in Robin’s clothes is cringey and he’s acting he has a crush on Robin. It’s very sudden and there was no hints to it, while it’s likely the writers trying to get brownie points to have LGBTQ representation. Cyborg was only seen in previous episodes having crushes on girls. Unless they’re trying to make Cyborg bisexual, but it appears to be forced.
  5. Robin goes insane and puts the Titans inside a Time Machine. The future scene is very dark.
    • The events of Staring At The Future appear to be a mainstay for the continuity as Nightwing (Adult Robin) is shown not to be married to Batgirl, have triplet babies, and still living in the Titans Tower. Instead, he’s a lonely man living in a rundown apartment.
    • Beast Boy’s reaction when he tried to prank call himself indicates that Beast Boy died young in the future. However, future episodes will undo this as the episodes that show the future show Beast Boy as an old man.
  6. Weird Ending: Robin learns that his sandwich somehow mutated and became sentient being with a high amount of intelligence and lives in a pocket dimension where everything is a vegetable. Robin “defeats” the sandwich by eating it. He also didn’t get any side effects as the sandwich was obviously mutated.
  7. Bad moral: Never let the anything go.

Redeeming Qualities

  1. The rest of the Titans are very likable because they try to get Robin to let the whole sandwich thing go because it’s just a sandwich. He could make a new one if he wanted one! Also, given the amount of time it was gone, it’s likely rotten now. (But given the sandwich mutated at the end of the episode, it’s like the result of being very rotten)
  2. The story Robin told has very fun visuals.
  3. At least Cyborg gets a happy future.
