"Scoop's Big Job" is the fourth episode of The Legend of the Golden Hammer mini-series as well as the twenty-fourth episode of the Bob the Builder series, Ready, Steady, Build!.
Summary
Spud and Scrambler are still searching for the Golden Hammer and are trying to figure out what the latest clue means. Scoop, meanwhile, is feeling jealous when Splasher helps out with the big jobs while restoring the lighthouse, and sets out to prove himself to be all that the team needs for dealing with big jobs. However, his attempts to outdo Splasher results in numerous disasters.
Why It Doesn't Do Its Big Job Properly
- Scoop is an insufferable idiot in this episode, as he gets jealous of Splasher taking his jobs when rebuilding an old lighthouse, and tries to prove to Bob that he can handle the big jobs by himself.
- Prior to this episode, Scoop had a reason to act bossy.
- In Scoop's in Charge, he wanted to prove to Bob that he can be in charge of building the Mayor's garage.
- In Snowed Under: The Bobblesberg Winter Games, while he was pretty unlikable throughout most of the special, he would get extremely angry and fussy at the other machines all because he thought they were "acting like they were on holiday" and would come across a cynical jerk as the special progresses.
- While he still messed up on both of these occasions, Bob is still very proud of him. But here, all of that is thrown out the window as it portrays Scoop so horribly to the point where he almost puts Bob in danger as seen in WIDDIBJP#4.
- Prior to this episode, Scoop had a reason to act bossy.
- Splasher (while likable) was completely pointless in this episode, as he only shows up to be pushed aside by Scoop.
- Plot hole: How can Splasher help with a building job when he's an amphibious car who normally carries people along the water and gives them tours?
- Even though this episode is not written by Sharon Miller, it still has a three-strikes formula like some episodes of the HiT model and Sharon Miller eras of Thomas & Friends as Scoop causes problems three times.
- First, he upstages Splasher by carrying a pile of rubble, and when he does so, he doesn't see where he's going and ends up in the water because of it.
- Second, he tries to move the new panes of glass for the lighthouse, but ends up going too fast and breaking them in the process.
- And third, and most especially, he races Splasher back to the yard for bags of cement, which instead turned out to be potatoes that Travis and Farmer Pickles dropped off at said location, crashes into a ladder that Bob was climbing on to fix the lighthouse, and almost causes him to have a severe accident.
- Spud and Scrambler (while the two are also likable) barely have anything to do with the episode's plot as they are still looking for Pirate Brickbeard's golden hammer.
- Scoop doesn't get punished by Bob for his actions in this episode, making him a Karma Houdini.
- Overall, this is the worst episode of Ready, Steady, Build!, and the original Bob the Builder series as a whole.
Redeeming Qualities
- Bob, Wendy, Muck, Dizzy, Roley, Lofty, Scrambler (despite having nothing to do with the plot), Spud (despite also having nothing to do with the plot), Travis, Farmer Pickles, and Splasher (despite being completely pointless) are still likable characters.
- The CGI animation is still good despite the jarring mouth movements from the vehicle characters.
- Scoop learns his lesson by sharing his big job with Splasher and clearing up the potatoes while the latter collects the cement.
- Decent ending: Bob and the team eventually fix the lighthouse while Spud and Scrambler continue to look for Pirate Brickbeard's golden hammer.
