Shrek Super Party is a 2002 party video game developed by Mass Media Games. The game is based on the Shrek movie series. This game is also similar to Pac-Man Fever (which has the same developer) and the Mario Party series of games. It was the last Shrek game to be published by TDK Mediactive before the rights were acquired by Activision.
Why It's Not Super
- Ugly graphics, even for Xbox, PS2 and GameCube standards that are on par with Trucker, Mortal Kombat: Special Forces and the DOS Mega Man games. The game actually looks like it belongs to a game released for the first PlayStation console, rather than for Xbox, PS2 and GameCube.
- The character models look terrible and they look like bobbleheads, when the characters from Shrek don't even have that big heads at all, thus making them look like not bobbleheads. Shrek Super Party however doesn't belong to that category at all.
- Every mini-game is swamp-themed, which shows how the devs were too lazy to make themes for every mini-game. And no matter which mini-game it will be, the theme will still be the exact same.
- Terrible animations, similiar to the animations from the first Shrek game on home consoles. And regardless of which character's animation plays.
- The Magic Mirror is the only character who talks. All the other characters are silent, like if someone drained their voices. Or they look like they are too scared to say something, so they are silent.
- The DJ mini-game is horrible, and you will never figure out what button does anything, which can be very annoying to people who play this mini-game.
- It rips off [ Mario Party], meaning the game is just unoriginal, like some of Destination Software, Torus Games and GameMill Entertainment' games, which is just to see that the game can be bad right as you expect.
- Simplistic textures.
- The game has framerate issues.
- The mini-games are boring.
- The evil-bog is the worst part of this game, and you have to restart all over again unless you have enough fairy dust. This is a waste of time to many people, especially if they would be late for something, but wanted to finish the evil-bog first before doing anything else they wanted.
Redeeming Qualities
- The soundtrack is decent.
- The bug mechanic was unique.
- The third Shrek party game, Shrek Carnival Craze Party Games fixed its issues.
- The first Shrek game for PS2.
Reception
The game was met with some mixed reception for the GameCube version and negative reviews for the Xbox And PS2 versions upon release. GameRankings and Metacritic gave it a score of 47% and 30 out of 100 for the PlayStation 2 version; 44% and 40 out of 100 for the GameCube version; and 39% and 33 out of 100 for the Xbox version.
