Sleepwalkers is a 1992 American horror film, written by Stephen King and directed by Mick Garris.

Plot

Two Sleepwalkers - ancient shapeshifting vampires who feed on the life force of human female virgins - move into the town of Travis, Indiana to find prey.

Why This Film Should Be Crucified

  1. Although it's a horror film, the campy nature makes it not scary and pretty much impossible to take seriously.
  2. The kills are an absolute joke and make no logical sense; a police officer gets stabbed in the back with an ear of corn, and 2 police cars explode with fire after a single bullet hits them.
  3. Misleading poster: It suggests that the cats are the main villains of the story, but they're actually the heroes in the actual film.
  4. The mood whiplash from a relatively calm first half to the over-the-top second half is pretty jarring.
  5. The acting is extremely horrible, especially Mädchen Amick in the second half, who just screams a lot and makes awkward facial expressions.
  6. As the movie progresses, we get a disgusting and gratuitous scene of Charles and his mother having sex in the bed.
  7. Laughable dialogue, with the most infamous example being "COP KEBAB!"
  8. The characters act really stupid; the cops are completely useless, and the Sleepwalkers themselves, despite being on the run, do a lot of things to draw attention to themselves.
  9. Lots of celebrity cameos (like Mark Hamill, Tobe Hooper, John Landis, Clive Barker, Ron Perlman and even Stephen King himself) that go nowhere and are ultimately wasted.
  10. Bad special effects that haven't aged well:
    • The morph effects in particular look really cheap.
    • The attacking cats are clearly puppets.

Redeeming Qualities

  1. The film is so over-the-top and cheesy that it's funny, especially when it comes to the second half.
  2. As mentioned before, the first half of the movie is relativity calm and more serious than the ridiculous second half.
  3. Andy Simpson's "WHAT DA F***?" reaction to Charles' random transformation while driving is unintentionally hilarious.
  4. Despite being misleading, the poster is pretty cool to look at.
  5. The ending theme is really great.

Trivia

  1. This is the first Stephen King film based on an original screenplay, rather than one of his existing stories.
  2. The people who play Tanya's parents (Lyman Ward and Cindy Pickett) were the same ones from Ferris Bueller's Day Off, who got married after that movie was done. However, this one caused them to divorce after it was completed.
