Slime Rancher is a first-person life simulation adventure video game developed and published by American indie studio Monomi Park. It was release on Windows, macOS, Linux and Xbox One on August 1, 2017. A PlayStation 4 version was released on August 21, 2018, and a Nintendo Switch version was released on August 11, 2021.
A sequel, titled Slime Rancher 2, was released on September 22, 2022.
Why It's Slimy
- The idea of making farm simulator, but with slime and first-person shooter is very interesting idea.
- What's more is this game is absolutely family friendly, and the game has no violence at all, at least if the tarr's hit you.
- Very nice and colorful graphics, even by 2017 standards.
- The character designs is so cute, both the human and the slime.
- Very tight control, and it's make senses that this game is trying to simulated from other FPS games.
- The gameplay is very addictive: You're collecting the slime to put on the cage, harvesting the plant, getting resources and you're give the food for feeding slime, protect, and most importantly: playing with slime is absolutely very fun.
- What's more is there mission objectives, each NPC is telling you to complete specific objective, like collecting the fruit or slime.
- Slime has so many type, and each type have different ability. For example Magma Slime can their to be explode, Water Slime, where you can place only in the water cage and it will be pop if you put on the ground, and so on.
- What's more interesting is each slime can eat the specific food, like Pink Slime that can eat anything, while other slime can only eat the specific food, or you can combine and fused this slime to making thing easier.
- Be careful: if you're put plort to eat the fused slime, it will become the Tarr that can hit you and eat the slime. Tarr is appeared out of nowhere or by eat the plort to fused slime, and to rid them is by uses the water as a ammo.
- There's the feral slime, this feral slime couldn't be tamed or suck it up as they attacking you because the feral slime is so harmful and dangerous. So how to pass them: by running.
- What's more interesting is each slime can eat the specific food, like Pink Slime that can eat anything, while other slime can only eat the specific food, or you can combine and fused this slime to making thing easier.
- There's the gadget, the gadget can be more easier to get the resources, each gadget have different resources to be found, and you can build and adding new gadget by finding the correct resources.
- If you want to collect the money, you must send the plort to gather you money, so the money will be increased everytime you're gathered. Or better yet, by completing the quest.
- You can also upgrade your farm field, your weapon and your equipment.
- There's so many area to explore and yes, each the area are locked by the key and in order to unlock the gate, you need find the key by find the Largos slime, the big size of slime.
- Each of the Largos Slime has specific food to eat, just like the original size of slime. And if you did eating too much the largos and then pops out, it rewarded either key, or just coin and items.
- There's so much event to do it and this event is more replay value to play:
- Mochi Miles, where you collect the quicksilver with time limit, and you must collect as much you can.
- The wild, where you must collect the fruit and toss them to bucket points.
- Finally is the Slimulation, it's like roguelike, where you can collect and get to the finish line, and if there's the enemies, you're shoot with the ooze, just like water to the Tarr.
- The ending is very heartwarming and decent: after you collect the rainbow plort to open the portal, you're going to the portal to see the ending and the ending is somewhat catchy with this songs.
Bad Qualities
- The game can be repetitive by some players, but still addictive for the gameplay.
- While the control are very tight, the jetpack control can be sometimes clunky.
- Slime can be annoying to inside the cage, especially the Tarr slime. Thankfully, you can upgrade the cage to prevent the slime from get out or avoid eating by the tarr.
- Getting the ending is absolutely tedious, and you need find the rare plort to do it.
- While the mission are varied, it can be repetitive.
- Find the resources is absolutely tedious, and this could be tiresome to be get.
Reception
The game received positive reviews by critics and users, with Metacritic score 81/100 from critics. It's sold more over 3 million copies by 2020, making the most successfully indie games.
