"Smurfette's Rose" is a Season 5 episode from the Smurfs cartoon show.
Synopsis
Smurfette asks Mother Nature for a blue rose, but the spell takes the blue color from her.
Why it Dosen't Deserve a Blue Rose
- Misleading Title Card: As usual, The title card shows Harmony Smurf playing his off-key trumpet while a unnamed Smurf is covering his ears, which does not happen at the episode at all since Harmony does not appear in this episode.
- The second half of the episode is a torture episode for Smurfette as she completely turned white and want to get blue again, while she is crying because of her appearance, this is somewhat deserved for her yelling at Sassette but still, she apologized previously.
- The episode pacing is terrible, as usual with most bad episodes as despite being 11 minutes long, it still feel like it is 22 minutes instead because of the countless slow paced scenes and because of the plot being terribly executed.
- Smurfette is completely unlikable and downright jerks in this episode as she yelled at Sassette for not watering her flowers and telling her to go back to where ever she came from.
- Vanity Smurf is also unlikable as he lets out a repulsed reaction, telling her that she has now turned white, which is not only mean-spirited but it could also appear as racist because white is actually a color that can receive racist comments at time in real life.
- To be fair, he was likely surprised but his reaction still is innapropriate and because of his repulsed reaction, he made the Smurfette crying.
- The scene of Smurfette yelling at Sassette is very mean-spirited to watch, and is pretty much unwatchable to the point of being one of the worst moment from the show and even would be the worst Smurfette moment ever.
- And not to mention that this moment could appear as filler and create a plot hole because the moment where Smurfette ask Sassette to take care of her flowers isn't seen.
- And even if Sassette did screw up her flowers, she still didn't deserved to be this much yelled at, especially that she did apologize for this.
- Smurfette overreact for having a blue rose, and even said that she would do everything to get it, which is nonsensical even for someone like her, and when she completely turned white, she want to get her blue color back and state that she hate the blue rose, Did you didn't said before that you would do everything for it?
- Gargamel and Azrael don't appear in this episode. Neither do the other villains on the show, which waste potential, even though this episode plot would not be fitting if we had villains in it.
- The animation while good, had some few animation errors as usual, even for 1985 standards, and look worse than usual as it is more stiff and the color palette is more washed out.
- Despite the ending being good, it end extremely abrutly as it cut right when Smurfette turning blue again, while yes this show is know for some of it's rushed ending, here it is so rushed that it's similar to some of the rushed endings from the 1979 Doraemon series.
Redeeming Qualities
- Good animation and voice acting as usual, despite being a bit worse than usual.
- Papa Smurf, The Smurflings, Handy, Clumsy, Mother Nature, Puppy, Baby, Farmer, Brainy, Tailor, Grouchy and Poet are the only likeable characters.
- Even though Smurfette was unlikable in the beginning, she become more tolerable later on as she apologized to Sassette, despite acting without logic as seen in some parts of the episode.
- Even though it is incredibly boring, the beginning is still decent and feel like a normal episode of The Smurfs.
- The episode concept could have worked if there was more funny moments and less mean-spirited moments.
- Good Ending: Smurfette recites the words, the winds pick up slightly and a lightning bolt flashes in the sky, with the blue rose falling off its stem, pricking Smurfette's finger and causing her to turn blue again.
Trivia
- Many foreign DVD releases (as well as the iTunes edition) carry the syndicated Smurfs Adventures repackaging of this episode, as opposed to the rest of the episodes, which remained uncut (although this episode also uses the modified Season 1 intro sequence and credits for foreign markets).
- According to Gerard Baldwin’s biography, this episode was written to satisfy an NBC executive who wanted there to be a black Smurf.
- In the syndicated version of the episode, the part where Smurfette, who is completely white all over, runs past Clumsy and Handy before retreating for her house has been edited out.
- Smurfette gets angry at Sassette for the first time.
