"Sodor Surprise Day" is the thirteenth episode of the sixteenth season of Thomas & Friends.

Plot

It is Sodor Surprise Day and Thomas tries to get Gordon to have fun, but he ruins the fireworks.

Why It Sucks

  1. Like several other episodes made in the Sharon Miller era, it uses the "three strikes" formula, the narrator repeats dialogue, and there is excessive alliteration and rhyming.
  2. Sodor Surprise Day is just April Fools' Day.
  3. The plot is similar to that of the 1960 Dr. Seuss book Green Eggs and Ham with Thomas trying to get Gordon to like Sodor Surprise Day.
  4. As usual for Seasons 12-16, Thomas is depicted as idiotic and foolish.
    • Even though hiding and blowing his whistle or scaring Gordon does not surprise Gordon, he does it repeatedly throughout the episode.
    • After seeing Gordon's reactions to his surprise at Brendam Docks, he keeps blowing his whistle, startling Cranky, causing him to drop the fireworks crate.
  5. Plot Holes:
    • Rosie, Whiff, and their trucks should not have been standing on the main line.
    • Rosie is surprised by Thomas' whistle, but she should have heard him saying he will make Gordon laugh.
      • Likewise, Whiff is surprised by Thomas scaring Gordon, but he should have remembered Thomas telling him he will surprise Gordon.
    • Cranky should have realized it was Thomas' whistle he was hearing when he unloads the fireworks at Brendam Docks.
    • It is unexplained why...
      • Gordon is pulling the express while he is traveling to Brendam Docks to collect the fireworks.
      • Thomas and Gordon are always facing opposite directions, even though they are traveling in the same direction towards Brendam Docks.
      • Harold dropped the fireworks off at Brendam Docks instead of the Sodor Search and Rescue Center.
      • Harold returns to Brendam Docks after dropping off the fireworks, other than plot convenience.
      • Cranky unloads the crate of fireworks from a conflat, instead of having Gordon, who is not pulling any trucks, take the conflat.
      • The fireworks are set off after Cranky drops the crate.

Redeeming Qualities

  1. Gordon is the only likeable character.
