Sonic Rush Adventure is a 2007 platform video game developed by Dimps with Sonic Team's assistance and published by Sega for the Nintendo DS. It is the direct sequel to Sonic Rush and is the second/penultimate game of the Sonic Rush trilogy.
Plot
Some time after the events of Sonic Rush, Sonic and Tails discover a tornado caused by mysterious energy source and using Tails' plane, head straight toward it, and end up unknowingly transported to another dimension. Marine the Raccoon finds the duo stranded and introduces herself. She wants to be an adventurer one day, and she asks them to help her go exploring. Using special items called materials, Tails builds the Wave Cyclone and our heroes set off.
Why It's an Adventurous Rush
- Improved level design over its predecessor, such as fewer bottomless pits and more fair enemy placement.
- Fun vehicle levels, such as the Wave Cyclone, Deep Typhoon, and Aqua Blast.
- Once again, the graphics are amazing for a DS game.
- The idea of an adventure-themed Sonic game is creative (in a good way) and interesting.
- Amazing music.
- There is a lot to explore, whether there are zones, hidden islands, or Johnny the Shark.
- Sonic Rush Adventure is also much longer then Sonic Rush, and if going for 100%, can last up to 13 and a half hours!
- Depending on what rank you get, you can earn materials to craft items or vehicle upgrades.
- Some of the best boss battles in a 2D Sonic game, especially the final bosses.
- There are hidden islands that can give you materials and have some callbacks to the first game, such as the final hidden island stage, which is basically Leaf Storm Act 1 of Sonic Rush.
- If Tails and Cream cheering you on during the first game's boss fights annoyed you, then good news: they no longer do that.
- Decent and unique side characters for the most part.
- Fun multiplayer modes.
- Missions are added and give out good rewards for completing them.
- The special stages, while difficult, are more forgiving than most other 2D Sonic games, especially since you can upgrade your ships and can try again as much as you like.
- It introduces Marine the Raccoon, who gets a lot of proper character development and becomes a pretty likable character later on in the game as she starts to trust Sonic and Tails as well as Blaze. She even sees the latter as her best friend and develops a close bond with her too. While she's initially a handful or even scatterbrained at times, she still means well nonetheless. Even when she felt that she couldn't do this adventuring alone, she makes a vow to never give up for bad reasons.
Bad Qualities
- Captain Whisker is a very annoying character while Marine is a bit annoying in the early parts of the game. (thankfully, the latter gets good character development and redeems herself later on.)
- Not much replay value once you defeat the true final boss.
- In order to advance to the next stages, you need one of the four vehicles, but in order to get them, you need Material, which is gathered by beating the previous stages for the right Material, tho unless you are able to get a high rank, your gonna have to replay them a sertent amount of times, which can get tedious and tiring.
- The same also applies to racing Johnny in order to get the Chaos Emeralds, with the second half of races requiring the Jet Ski to be upgraded twice by Material. But even that's not available until you beat Big Swell for the first time.
- The Ocean Tornado can be tedious at times.
- The story isn't that great, although it has its good moments.
- No appearance of Cream The Rabbit and/or Cheese The Chao despite their significant roles in Sonic Rush, they don't even get a mention by Blaze The Cat, despite Cream and Cheese's close relationship and huge impact on her.
- Haunted Ship can be a slight difficulty spike, especially if you're playing as Sonic.
- Sonic Rush Adventure seems to rip-off some elements from The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass.
Tips and Tricks
- Make sure you get the Jet Ski upgraded before doing the later half of the Johnny Races.
- An easier way to get sertent Material is by fighting bosses.
