Sonic the Hedgehog (not to be confused with the 2020 film) (or simply called Sonic the Hedgehog: The Movie) is a 1996/1999 science fiction action comedy animated film based on SEGA's video game franchise of the same name.

Plot

Sonic the Hedgehog, his sidekick Miles "Tails" Prower, and their close ally Knuckles the Echidna are determined to thwart a plan that would turn their Land of the Sky into the equivalent of the Land of Darkness, which lurks beneath the surface. So they plow through to the center of the planet and the ancient city of Robotropolis/Eggman Land to do righteous battle. The big question of the day is whether the usually evil Dr. Robotnik is telling the truth for once or sending the good guys into a trap.

Why It's On Fire (like Knuckles' hat)

  1. Very smooth animation, even for direct-to-video standards.
    • The animation itself is similar to the opening sequence for Sonic CD, in which also looked quite amazing.
  2. The intense fight scene between Sonic and Hyper Metal Sonic.
  3. Similar to Sonic CD, the film has a dark art direction and tone but maintains some lighthearted moments at the same time.
  4. A few cool one-liners that would become internet memes soon, like "Shut up, Tails!", "Strange, isn't it?" and "My Hat's on Fire!"
    • "You might know everything I'm going to do, but that's not gonna help you since I know everything YOU'RE going to do!"
  5. Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Robotnik, and Hyper Metal Sonic are still as likable and awesome as ever.
    • On that note, this is the true first time where Metal Sonic speaks. Really sorry, Sonic Heroes.
  6. Many funny moments. For example, Robotnik (or Eggman, depending on how you call him) uses two missiles, but one of them is the rabbit that successfully hits the Tornado, when the turtle missile moves very slowly, and Robotnik's Wedding plans with Sara.
  7. It follows the source material with a few minor changes.
  8. Hyper Metal Sonic also later reappears as a redeemed character named Shard the Metal Sonic in the Sonic Archie Comics series.
  9. Excellent soundtrack, as it was originally going to feature the soundtrack but it was dropped due to poor sales for the Japanese release.
  10. Sad and touching moment when Sonic tries to save Metal Sonic, but he refuses and says "There is only one Sonic".

Bad Qualities

  1. Sara is very annoying in every part of the movie, similar to Princess Elise from Sonic 2006. She is also part of many inappropriate scenes, such as Tails snagging on her, which is rather unfitting for a G-rated movie.
  2. The English dub is terrible, with very sub-par voice acting as almost all the characters have been incredibly miscast, and most of the characters' lines are very annoying and hammy. Not to mention, some of them have pretty laughable dialogue.
    • In addition, Sonic's English voice not only sounds incredibly irritating, immature, and unpleasant to listen to but also sounds like some sort of southern-accented youngster and/or a kid trying but failing to sound like a teenager.
    • On top of that, Tails sounds just as annoying as, if not more than, Sonic, and also sounds like an African-American woman, which doesn't even fit him at all.
  3. Somewhat bland humor, especially compared to the games.

Trivia

  • A censored version exists in the form of the 1999 VHS release.
  • Fans have pointed out that in one scene, Sonic looks like he's pointing the middle finger at Eggman. This may have been unintentional whatsoever.
  • Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Metal Sonic disappear and reappear similar to the characters from the Dragon Ball series.
