Spider-Man(also known as Spider-Man 2000) is an action-adventure video game based on Marvel's Spider-Man. It was developed by Neversoft and published by Activision using the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater game engine for the PlayStation in 2000; the game was later ported by different developers to various systems including the Game Boy Color and Nintendo 64 that same year, as well as the Dreamcast and Microsoft Windows in 2001.
Plot
The game follows Spider-Man as he is framed by a doppelganger for stealing a device created by a supposedly reformed Dr. Otto Octavius, now Spider-Man must find whoever framed him and stop them. Meanwhile, after Eddy Brock lost the chance to get great pictures of Spider-Man for the Daily Bugle, Venom returns to get revenge on Spider-Man.
Why It's Our Spider-Man
- It's the first Spider-Man game to be made in 3D graphics.
- The narration is done by none other than Stan Lee.
- Awesome gameplay that mixes platforming with beat 'em up, without making it repetitive.
- Awesome bosses, with the final boss being a new character exclusive to the game, Monster Ock.
- Awesome graphics, even today, especially with the Dreamcast and PC versions.
- Many costumes from the Spider-Man comics, such as the Symbiote Spider-Man, to be unlocked that either give you powers (making the game easier) or takes some of your powers (making the game harder and more challenging).
- High replay value.
- Collect comics from the series.
- Four difficulties, which each have different collectables and challenges.
- A special Training mode that acts like a challenge mode as well.
- You can swing anytime.
- Climb and crawl on almost any wall and roof.
- Amazing metal/electro-industrial soundtrack.
- Despite the game's name, you get to meet many other Marvel characters such as Daredevil, The Human Torch, Captain America, Black Cat, Punisher, Ghost Rider, Silver Surfer, The Watcher, as well as references to characters such as Thor, Namor, and Galactus.
- Cheats mode, where you type cheats that either unlock stuff or make changes to the game.
- Speaking of which, many players have discovered that if you type in curse words in the cheats, Spider-Man pops up and punches the word into a more family-friendly one.
- Character Viewer with each character explained by Stan Lee himself.
- Top-notch voice acting. Rino Romano reprises his role as Spider-Man from the 1999 Spider-Man Unlimited cartoon.
- You can view the cutscenes in comic book style anytime.
- Venom is really funny, once you defeat him the second time he becomes your mate. But is now pretty dumb and has hilarious dialogue like "Surf the web, surf the web.".
Bad Qualities
- The Story Mode is short, although the game has high replay value.
- The character models in the cutscenes are ugly.
- The PC version has several bugs, including one that makes the cutscenes never appear.
- Due to limitations, the N64 version lacks cutscenes, replacing them with static images. They are stylized to look like comics, which is both cool and respectful of the source material.
- The Game Boy Color version is flawed due to poor hit-detection and clunky controls, but still, it can be fun to play.
- You collect comics, but unsurprisingly you don't really get to read any.
- With the exception of the Symbiote suit, Spider-Man can only swing up to two web strands.
Reception
The game was met with positive reviews upon release and is considered to be one of the best Spider-Man games ever made.
WatchMojo ranked this game the 4th BEST in the Top 10 BEST & WORST Spider-Man games.[1]
