Splatoon 2 is a team-based third-person shooter game developed and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo Switch. It is a sequel to the 2015 Wii U title Splatoon. This game was released worldwide on July 21, 2017.

Why It's Still Splataculous

  1. Like the first game, it's completely different from other shooter games and in a good way.
  2. Despite being mainly a multiplayer game, the single-player content isn't an obvious afterthought, unlike recent multiplayer shooters. There's a single-player campaign with a rather substantial amount of content in the base game and a second story mode as a DLC, known as Octo Expansion, which is much more challenging compared to the first one. The single-player content is actually good and fun.
  3. Frantic fast-paced multiplayer action.
  4. Colorful and excellent graphics with gorgeous visuals.
  5. Great new features like new weapons and stages.
  6. The multiplayer mode functions very well with the Nintendo Switch's ability to change between TV and portable mode.
  7. Its gameplay is quite addictive, just like the first game.
  8. Non-intrusive use of motion controls that make accurate aiming a lot easier than an analog stick.
  9. Awesome soundtrack, most notably songs from the game's fictional band, Off the Hook.
  10. Despite costing 20 dollars, the Octo Expansion DLC is incredibly worth it, you get to play as an octoling for the first time and spanning 80 challenge levels that make use of the game's mechanics in interesting and unique ways.
  11. It's one of the few games that manages to get the 'Games as a Service" model right.
  12. Introduces Salmon Run, a COD zombies-like mode where you face off hordes of Salmonids. Something the “Extinction” mode in Call of Duty: Ghosts didn’t do very well.
  13. Splatfests from the previous game return, with some unique ones that stand out from the rest such as Spookfest, Frosty Fest, Springfest (where Pearl and Marina wear the outfits they wore in Octo-Expansion), and the Splatocalypse (final splatfest in Splatoon 2). These certain Splatfests are unique because they last for two days (excluding the final Splatfest which is three days coming in July) rather than just one whole day.
  14. Finding hackers in a match are very scarce due to Nintendo's Ban Waves.
  15. Not long after the E3 Splatoon 2 Championships 2019 ended, the director of Splatoon revealed to the winners and title defenders of the championships (gg boyz of Japan. Yes, that's the team's name!) a trailer of the final Splatfest that took place in July 2019 called Splatocalypse. It lasted three days making it the longest Splatfest in Splatoon history. It also coincided with Splatoon 2's second year anniversary. He also revealed that there will be a 5.0 update not long after the final Splatfest ended in late July, where you can play in all Shifty Stations and all night-time versions of the 23 current stages in the game.
  16. You get a Splatfest Tee that comes with an Ability double after you update your game to the 5.0 update.
  17. It had a cross-over Splatfest with Rise of The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles as a special treat from Nickelodeon. The same way how both Nintendo and Nickelodeon crossed over with SpongeBob in 2016 during the days of the first video games' Splatfests.
  18. The first and second sequences of escaping Deep Sea Metro in Octo Expansion are sweet references to the Metal Gear and the Sly Cooper games.

Bad Qualities

  1. Salmon Run is only available at certain times of the week.
  2. Unskippable announcements that appear whenever you start up the game, which can get extremely annoying! But at least it can still get you to the game anyway despite that.
  3. Some innuendo moments, like Marina's infamous "Inking their splatzone" line.
  4. No split-screen multiplayer. Peer-2-Peer is still used for multiplayer connectivity instead of dedicated servers, which is considered unacceptable in 2017. And speaking of it, it's also quite unstable and annoying because you can disconnect at random times.
    • Also, if you don't have friends to play with, you can't play the Splatfest Shifty Stations in Private Battle mode.
  5. The secret final boss of Octo Expansion, Inner Agent 3, which is extremely difficult and can take hours, days and even weeks to defeat due to how aggressive their A.I. is, and once you defeat them, the reward you get is pretty disappointing: a Golden Toothpick. Which is the reward that thanks to you for collecting all of the mem cakes and beating a very hard boss, which comes off as the worst reward imaginable. The reward would have been a replica of the clothes from Agent 8 or a replica weapon based on that instead of a pointless golden toothpick.
  6. Speaking of Octo Expansion, it can be bit dark for some people and players.
    • According to the backstory, Sanitized Octarians were once normal Octarians who wandered in the Deep Sea Metro. They first met a telephone (who turned out to be Commander Tartar), who tells them about the "Promised Land" that awaits them outside the Deep Sea Metro Station and asks them to collect all 4 Thangs to get there. Once they found all 4 Thangs (which turned out to be parts to a large blender), Tartar then records their screams before being blended they were then killed and ground up in Commander Tartar's blender, then Tartar collected their remains from the blender and created Sanitized Octarians from the remains. In one of the levels, Marina mentions that they have no pulse, which makes them zombies.
  7. Some specials from the previous game such as the Kraken, Killer Wail (although the Killer Wail was used by Pearl in Octo Expansion and Final Splatfest), etc. didn't return. It does have a good explanation of their absence in the Sunken Scrolls, however.
  8. The Splatfest outfits you get are only available temporary, even though they are required to 100% the game. Plus, You can't even keep Splatfest Tees, including the ones from the Final Splatfest.
  9. Salmon Run rarely gets updated with new maps and bosses. The last time it was updated was November 2018.
  10. Some maps from the previous game also didn't return, plus not all of the updated weapons for the second game are not as good as how they were originally designed in the original 2015 game.
  11. Some of the Splatfest topics are super dumb, such as the European Splatfest about which way you would prefer toilet paper to face. Hell, the Inkling vs. Octoling Splatfest is kind of racist because... who thought this Splatfest topic is a good idea?
  12. If you don't have friends to play with, you can't play the Splatfest Shifty Stations in Private Battle mode.
