SpongeBob's Truth or Square is a video game based on the SpongeBob SquarePants episode with the same title. It was released for SpongeBob's 10th anniversary. It was released on October 26, 2009. This page will only cover the Nintendo DS version.
Why It Dropped on a Deck and Flopped Like a Fish
- The voices in this version don't even fit some of the characters, especially SpongeBob, since he sounds like a young kid in this version. This is because Altron used sounds from their library rather than hiring the actors from the other versions, which is very lazy and also counts as reusing assets.
- Horrible graphics even for Nintendo DS standards. As some characters are in 2D, especially Gary and the 3D characters have low quality textures, Spongebob's nose looks 2D when viewing his model on the front. Even the DS port for “Atlantis SquarePantis” has much better graphics than this.
- Less levels compared to the home console versions.
- The gameplay is somewhat gimmicky, especially when compared to the console and PSP versions, and also feel like a poor man version of Atlantis SquarePantis gameplay on DS, due to this playing in a similar way.
- Awful controls that are very clunky and unresponsive, they even are slippery and sometime stiff.
- Many glitchs that are mostly related from the poor hit-detection.
- The tounge sliding mechanic that allows you to stick on the walls is underused being only in 1 of the 10 levels.
- The cutscenes were downgraded in this version, most of the cutscenes have no voice acting and are just mostly text-boxes, It was late 2009 and there was no excuse for lack of voice acting in cutscenes on DS games then.
- Most of the music sounds like it came from a completely different game, even though the soundtrack is somewhat decent.
- SpongeBob is the only playable character in this version.
- Extremely short, the game can be finished in only 3 hours.
- Some of the soundtrack sounds like it was recycled from Atlantis SquarePantis.
The Only Quality That Got Scurvy
- Despite being downgraded, most of the story from the home console versions is still there.
Reception
Unlike the other versions, the game received mixed to negative reviews by critics and especially by the gamers, who founded this port to be even worse than the PSP version.
