SpongeBob's Truth or Square is a video game based on the SpongeBob SquarePants episode with the same title. It was released on the Wii, Xbox 360, PSP and Nintendo DS to celebrate SpongeBob's 10th anniversary in October 26, 2009. While the Wii and Xbox 360 versions were made by Heavy Iron Studios and the DS version was made by Altron, the PSP version was made by Barking Lizards Technologies.

Bad Qualities

  1. Unlike the console versions, 80% of the cutscenes aren't animated, which is odd since the cutscenes are fantastic in the Wii and Xbox 360 versions.
  2. The controls for the camera are pretty bad. Instead of using the D-Pad, you need to hold R and move the little analog stick.
  3. The Buff Power-Up looks pretty weird on SpongeBob. He is wearing no headband and you can see through his eyebrows.
  4. Poor graphics. While not terrible, at worst they are pretty similar to SpongeBob SquarePants: Revenge of the Flying Dutchman.
  5. Bland lighting, even for PSP standards.
  6. Lower quality textures.
  7. This version is buggier than the console versions and even the DS version. And similar to Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), this game uses the Havok engine, which is used for many other great games. Though this can be excusable due to the engine running on a portable system. But even still, there are some glitches that you can’t find on the other versions:
    • You can go past walls and bypass certain areas.
    • You can jump on ground that isn’t supposed to be accessible.
  8. The soundtrack loops one very short piece of music forever, and voice-clips are lower-quality.
  9. Less costumes than the console versions.
  10. The trivia questions on the loading screens are gone.
  11. Terrible frame rate. It dips in quality whenever there are a lot of enemies and objects on screen.
  12. The power ups music and even the mid-boss theme music aren’t present.
  13. This and SpongeBob: The Yellow Avenger are the only SpongeBob games to be on the PSP. Only 2 SpongeBob games were released for the system while the DS got a total of 9. If we include the Nicktoons games on the PSP and DS, the PSP would still have 2 due to there being no Nicktoons games for the system, while the DS would have 15 games with SpongeBob.

Good Qualities

  1. Includes two cut levels, which give this version more replay value.
  2. Hitting enemies after jumping does more damage, something other versions lacked.
  3. The Patrick, Sandy, and Squidward power-ups are still in this version.
  4. The models, while ugly, do look like the models in the console versions.
  5. The load times are shorter than the Console versions.
  6. The controls are still good and are better than the DS version due to the PSP having an Analog Stick.
  7. There are 3 mini-games that you can play by yourself or with up to 4 players.
  8. It is pretty impressive seeing a fully 3D SpongeBob game on a portable in the late 2000’s, though it isn’t as impressive as the DS version.
