"Believe it or not, we tried steering that away from torturing SQ... it was a bit more brutal in earlier stages."
— Dave Cunningham, yes really.
"Squidiot Box" is an episode from Season 14 of SpongeBob SquarePants.
Plot
Squidward takes a trip inside the imagination box and must rely on SpongeBob and Patrick's creativity in order to escape.
Why It Lost Its Imagination (in a bad way)
- The biggest problem with the episode that it completely misses the point of the original and completely insults the charm of the original and the Imagination meme.
- The fact that we got to see what it was like inside the box when it was Squidward's imagination ruins most of what its prequel episode is supposed to be because we weren't supposed to see what it was like inside the box when it was SpongeBob's and Patrick's imaginations, we were either supposed to be like Squidward or imagine with SpongeBob and Patrick.
- It even contains a lot of Squidward torture, such as when Patrick tells Squidward about a forest when he is imagining a beach and it changes to that as Squidward starts getting tortured as it is more of an insult than a love letter to fans.
- It even contains a bunch of fan-service such as DoodleBob's appearance, which is unneeded of a sequel like this. Even Ink Lemonade gets referenced there when Squidward uses his nose to create a door.
- The title card looks boring as it looks like a cardboard and a text says "SQUIDIOT BOX" and that's it.
Qualities That Are Imaginary
- They brought the famous "Imagination Rainbow" Meme back (some people see this as a bad thing though).
- Squidward is the only likeable character.
- The crew later try to steering away for torture episodes.
- Some funny moments.
- Despite its flaws, it was nice to see a remake of the "Idiot Box" episode, but this has became wasted potential due to the problems this episode had.
- The design for the box repairman is very good.
Reception
This episode was received overwhelmingly negative reception by many fans and critics (and even Dave Cunningham himself) for missing the point of the original. It is often considered to be the worst of Season 14 along with Don't Make Me Laugh. Vailskibum posted a review about the episode on YouTube about this episode being bad.
