Stand by Me is a 1986 American coming-of-age adventure comedy-drama film directed by Rob Reiner and starring Wil Wheaton, River Phoenix, Corey Feldman, and Jerry O'Connell. The film's plot is based on Stephen King's 1982 novella, The Body. Its title is derived from Ben E. King's eponymous song, which plays over the ending credits.

Plot

Gordie, Chris, Teddy, and Vern are four friends who decide to hike to find the corpse of Ray Brower, a local teenager, who was hit by a train while plucking blueberries in the wild.

Why It Rocks

  1. All of the actors' performances in this movie are amazing, mainly Corey Feldman, Wil Wheaton, River Phoenix, and Jerry O’Connell as the four young main characters.
  2. Great dialogue that’s well said by the actors, such as the “Suck my fat one, you cheap dime store hood.” line.
  3. Nicely-done character and story development.
  4. A perfect blend of well-executed funny, serious, and heartwarming moments throughout the film.
  5. It captures the exciting and adventurous tone of the book it was based on (Stephen King’s The Body).
  6. The relationship between Gordy and Denny is better developed in the film than in the novel.
  7. Gordy, Chris, Teddy, and Vern share a very realistic and watchable boyhood bond.
  8. The setting/environment ties into the story very well.
  9. TRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAIN!!!!!!!
  10. Extremely good pacing for a storyline.
  11. Likable, inspirational, and memorable characters, such as Teddy, Chris, Vern, and Gordy.
  12. Richard Dreyfuss does an outstanding job at narrating the film.
  13. Both the book and film show that Stephen King can write more than just suspenseful or scary stories.
  14. An original, well-written plot line.
  15. Ace Merrill is an unforgettable antagonistic character and Kiefer Sutherland does an amazing job performing as him.

Reception

On review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, the film has an approval rating of 91% based on 53 reviews, with a rating average of 8/10. At Metacritic, which assigns a weighted mean rating to reviews, the film has a score of 75 based on 20 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews."
