Stimpy's Invention is an episode of The Ren & Stimpy Show.

Plot

Thinking Ren is unhappy, Stimpy invents a Happy Helmet to make him happy again. However, in a fit of maniacal rage, he destroys the Happy Helmet and grabbed Stimpy by the neck. Ren was angry the whole time and soon found out he loves being angry.

Why It Rocks

  1. The animation by Carbunkle Cartoons looks impressive for a full year production. Bob Jaques was also involved in supervising the ink-and-paint and camera process at Fil-Cartoons, making up for their bad work in previous episodes.
    • Thanks to him overhauling the production system for the survival of artistry, Fil-Cartoons started to improve their animation for Dexter's Laboratory and the What-A-Cartoon Show.
  2. The jokes and visual gags are pretty clever in a mix of psychodramas and slapstick comedies, something that Adult Party Cartoon failed to do because of their long drawn-out gags and disturbing content.
  3. The famous "Happy Happy Joy Joy" song, which was inspired by the songs of Burl Ives, became the most famous song of the series, which was perfectly sung by John Kricfalusi himself as Stinky Wizzleteats, mainly by how catchy the song is and some of its lyrics like "A fly marrying a bumblebee".
  4. Funny moments, such as the Stay-Put Socks gag (filled with glue) and the Cheese-O-Phone (which Stimpy believes it can help talk to cheese anywhere in the world).
  5. The Happy Helmet is an amazing invention and is capable of making Ren the opposite of being angry. In this state, he is forced to do nice things for Stimpy (like ironing clothes and cleaning out filthy litterboxes).
  6. Mark Kaulser was responsible for animating a portion of the "Happy, Happy, Joy, Joy" dance sequence featuring Ren and Stimpy. He is one of the few artists to animate in the States.
  7. Twist Ending: Stimpy finally noticed that Ren was angry the whole time, while being held by the neck. Ren is about to steam up, until HE realizes that he loves being angry and thanks Stimpy for making him feel great.

The Only Bad Quality

  1. Despite the animation looking better than the previous episodes, a few mistakes were still left in.
    • Stimpy's eyes float for a few frames during the Stay Put Socks gag.
    • In the invention sequence, Stimpy's nose is colored red for three scenes.

Reception

This episode has been considered one of the show's most famous and also one of the best episodes the show has ever made. It also was praised for the song "Happy Happy, Joy Joy", which became a popular hit from the series.

Trivia

  • This episode was almost rejected, as an executive from Nickelodeon believed that the episode would "terrify children", possibly due to Ren's creepy smile and his psychotic laughter throughout most of the episode. John K. believed that they would love the episode and it's story. Oddly enough, the executive read the story of the episode, they started to love it, and asked John if he could make another episode that would to be another cult hit like "Stimpy's Invention".
