Stormlord (jap. ストームロード) is a sidescrolling platforming game originally released for the ZX Spectrum, Commodore 64, Amiga, Atari ST, Amstrad CPC and DOS-based computers by Hewson Consultants in 1989. Later RazorSoft ported the Amiga-version for the Sega Mega Drive in 1990 - that version was only released in North America and Japan.
Gameplay
The game is a standard sidescroller puzzler where you kill enemies with a star-like weapon and travel rapidly from back and forth through each level with a particularly-powerful trampoline. In certain versions like in the Mega Drive, this is replaced by a falcon. However, your route through each level must be carefully planned out, since the falcon can transport the player on one-way trips and if all fairies have not been freed from the previous area, it's impossible to win.
Why it Sucks
- The game is cryptic - you must collect every fairy in the level in a specific order otherwise you won't be able to finish the stage otherwise you'll have to reset the game and start all over again!
- Cheap traps and enemies everywhere. For example bees that are way faster than your character.
- The main character has sluggish movement and at least in the Genesis version you can't control his jumping.
- Sub-par graphics even for the time.
- It's possible to end up in instances where the player is stuck but unable to die, forcing the player to reset the game.
- The soundtrack is poor.
- The controls are bad, and they also are clunky and stiff.
- Speaking of bad controls, your character is very slow.
- The game is pretty short, lasting only 40 minutes if you're good at it.
Reception
The original computer versions got positive reviews, but the Mega Drive version has received mixed reviews. Actually, Sega of America pulled the Sega Genesis edition of the game off the market and forced Razorsoft to give clothing to cover up the fairies' bare breasts.
