The Super A'Can is a Taiwan-exclusive SNES ripoff released in 1995 by Funtech. Inside the console is a Motorola 68000 CPU, which was also used in the Sega Genesis and Neo Geo.

It's the only game console ever developed in Taiwan.

Why It Flopped

  1. At an initial price of NT$2,900 (about US$110), it was too expensive for regular consumers.
  2. It was released in the 3D era, where the PlayStation 1 and Sega Saturn were already out, making the console a commercial failure due to its outdated 2D graphics. Even the Super Nintendo and the Sega Genesis were doing fine.
    • To add insult to injury, Funtech originally had plans to make an add-on, called the Super Color, that would have enhanced the console with 3D graphics, but it was never released.
  3. The console and its games were also really hard to find in stores, which greatly affected their sales.
  4. Only twelve games were ever released for the system, and almost all of them were poorly made clones.
  5. If programming games for a new console in general wasn't time-consuming enough, the Super A'Can's development tools were rudimentary, leading the game development process to be even more protracted.

Redeeming Qualities

  1. The startup is decent.
  2. The controller is great.
