Super Contra X (SUPER魂斗羅X) is an unlicensed Famicom game based on the Contra series, developed by Chengdu Tai Jing Da Dong Computer Co some time in the 1990s (likely in 1994).
Overview
This isn't a complete clone of Contra or any game in the series, but instead tries to remake the engine and use it in completely different levels. Most of the weapons from that game are present, but function differently. The Default Gun is similar to the original, but sometimes pressing the fire button doesn't shoot a bullet when it's supposed to due to unresponsive controls. The Machine Gun fires slower and and doesn't allow you to jump while shooting. The Spread Gun only fires in three directions and the Laser is more like the one from Contra 4 in that you can fire multiple shots on the screen at once and that the shots don't disappear when you fire repeatedly.
Why It's Attack Aggresively (In A Horrible Way)
- For starters, even for a bootleg, it probably had the biggest amount of collision glitchs to the point of being on par with the Makon Soft games made for the Game Boy, in fact because of this and many other problems, the hit-detection is absolutely horrible and we had no words to describe how bad that and the game itself is bad.
- As stated in the first bad quality, this game had probably the absolute worst hit-detection ever in history of gaming and manage to be as bad as the Makon Soft games, if not even worst, because of so many reasons that are:
- The fact that sometime you shoot and the enemies are still alive and are not killed, creating a lot of cheap deaths that are extremely frustrating and unfair, and it's only the beginning.
- In fact, we can clearly see that you hit the enemies with a weapon but due to how atrociously horrible the programmation is, they are not killed until they decided to die, which make the game completely unplayable and unfair as well as being frustrating, and as stated before, this is only the beginning of how bad this bootleg is, there's even worst than that, yep, you heard us, There's even worse than the worst collision in history.
- The weapons expect maybe the S weapon are the main reason of why the hit-detection is so bad because it had a terribly small hit-box, which mean that if you got the weapon of the beginning, then it will likely fail to kill the enemies for a lot of times, creating a lot of crappy moments that will get you at your last nerve.
- The fact that sometime you shoot and the enemies are still alive and are not killed, creating a lot of cheap deaths that are extremely frustrating and unfair, and it's only the beginning.
- The soundtrack is very bad, because not only it is bland but also it terribly port the original musics to a new sound engine, when most of the musics this game use are from either the original or Super C, and those we're released in 1998-1990.
- Not to mention that it is extremely repetitive, especially in stage 3 and 6, which become annoying very quickly and also it just make you want to turn off the song.
- The boss theme is pretty much the worst offender because it is based on the boss theme of Contra 3, except that it sound absolutely unbearable and doesn't even sound close to that awesome music.
- The 3 second jingle in the title screen is also ear bleeding, so much to the point of being on par with the horrible title screen music of Fist of the North Star on the NES, even without even seen a screenshot of the game, you will already know that this game is bad with the terribly made jingle, yep that how bad the first impression of the game is.
- The graphics, as what you would expect for a bootleg, are absolutely horrendous and are some of the worst graphics you might ever seen in a Famicom bootleg, they're so bad that they are on par with some of those horrendous LJN looking games such as The Uncanny X-Men or Terminator, which we're howewer official games and those look just as bad.
- The sprites are one of the worst offender because not only they are extremely undetailled but also they are poorly drawned, had awful art style, it's lightning is abysmal and their colors are just plain hideous, despite that the main character looking like one of the sprites in the original game.
- The colors palette is atrociously bad and will make you know that even 1983 Famicom games look better than this because the colors are way too dark (in a bad way), are horribly washed out and they doesn't even feel close to those of the original, which looked colorful and really looked good to the eyes, in comparison, Super Contra 7, another Contra bootleg for the NES (which was decent, howewer), looked way more colorful and lively, as well as having good graphics overall, but of course that one wasn't made by the same developpers.
- The backgrounds had the worst colors in the entire game, because they just look sad, instead of colorful or even dark, when in darker tone games for the NES, the colors can be dark if well made, but not like this.
- The enemies sprites barely even look like a NES game and are extremely poorly designed, even though some of the bosses look alright.
- The backgrounds howewer are the worst case of this, because as stated before, not only they look sad but also undetailled and completely hideous, as they doesn't even look unfinished and feel like they we're made in MS-Paint, even for a NES bootleg game, which is just lazy and unnaceptable, even if again, it's a bootleg.
- The animation are just as bad as the rest of the graphics since it look extremely robotic, and overall feel unfinished, like if the developpers didn't care about this game quality, which is pretty much true because there's absolutely nothing good about this game.
- The weapons all suck to the point of having no good weapons in the game, in fact not even the S, who is one of the best weapon of the franchise, is good to use in this bootleg thank to how slow and horribly programmed it is.
- The worst of them all is possibly the basic weapon, which is even worse than in the official games due to being extremely unresponsive and being even more poorly programmed than the other weapons.
- There's a two players mode but unlike the official games, it isn't even worth it because of how bad the game already is and also, beside that doesn't work also because the game was not designed with that in mind, and if you're not idiot, then you pretty much prefer to play second players mode in the official games rather than this bootleg.
- The controls are of an extreme degree of being terrible and you even need to play it to truly believe how atrocious they are, as they are so bad that there's even more reasons than Bubsy 3D on why they are so bad, in fact they are so terrible that some of the worst NES games ever made could had the best controls when comparing them to this bootleg.
- First off, they are horribly unresponsive and it's the main reason of why they are so bad in the first place, because when you jump, they take one second, yep you heard us, 'one full second, how bad can it get ? You will soon know why, since the worst of it is that they are so unresponsive that they make the game completely unplayable, and even the easier obstacles are hard to dodge, just because of those absolute crap of delays, and this will get you on your last nerve and might even make you want to explode your controller or even your own house, yep, that how atrociously horrible they are, we had no words to describe how atrocious they are.
- Second, not only they are incredibly unresponsive to the point of being unplayable, but they are very clunky to move and feel rather stiff and because of this, it feel like a massive downgrade from the NES official games (yep, even Contra Force control better than this, and that game also wasn't very good).
- The last thing is that you can't shoot when jumping, which is incredibly annoying and painful because due to how bad the enemies placements are, you clearly need to shot when jumping but you can't directly.
- The enemies placements is completely annoying and always make you mad by pooping in your direction with little time to react, and it cause cheap deaths, especially if you doesn't had a great weapon (not that the weapons in this game being great anyways).
- The level design is unsurprisingly terrible, with too many awful platforms placements, awful enemies placements (as said in WIAA#6), and overall is completely unbalanced and is not designed with the awful controls of the game, in fact none of the levels are good or even feel fun to play, and even for a bootleg it is completely unnaceptable.
- Stage 1 is very bland yet annoyingly hard to the point of being impossible to beat it the first try when you first played the game because of the awful enemies placements, terrible platforming and the horrible hit-detection that make the game extremely frustrating and unplayable.
- Stage 2 can be very annoying despite being possibly the best level (even if it's not good), because of once again the awful enemies placements and the hit-detection of the obstacles that are complete crap and the stage play a bit too fast too.
- Stage 3 is a bit better than stage 1 but still it is bad because it is way too long and boring, also the enemies can spawn of nowhere and are annoying to deal with, albeit not as much as in stage 1, or especially the later stages.
- Stage 4 is filled with extremely repetitive level structure as well as featuring some of the worst enemies in the game, and because of this, it is unfairly difficult and thus make it nearly unplayable.
- Stage 5 had horrible platforms placements and had annoying enemies placements once again, and the level is once again very repetitive to the point of being almost impossible to beat this without being frustrated or even being going crazy.
- Stage 6 had easily the absolute worst case of the horrible levels in this game, especially the first half with the train because enemies constantly come to you and kill you with little to no time to react, and it's definitely annoying, even worse, the other half is bad because of the annoying enemies and the horrible platforms placements.
- Stage 7 is overly long, and had the most annoying enemies of the game to the point of being unbearable and that will make you going crazy because of how bad it is, not to mention that the level structure is much more repetitive and boring, and the platforming is almost impossible to get fun with.
- The bosses are way too easy and are almost impossible to lose to them, creating a horribly unbalanced difficulty because the rest of the game is frustratingly difficult, while the bosses are easy, in fact the only redeeming quality of those bosses are pretty much their designs, and even then they aren't as good as in the official games.
- Unbalanced difficulty that is completely all over the place, because not only the levels themself are extremely hard but the game is hard for all the wrong reasons to the point of being even harder than Super C (even though that game was hard but still extremely fun), and most of the things aren't even because the game was designed to be difficult but rather because of the abysmal programming.
- Most of the time it is because of the horrible hit-detection that barely even hit the enemies, and for the most parts, this is the reason of why this game is so hard.
- The controls are a perfect exemple too, being so unresponsive that it not only make the game unplayable but also make the game horribly hard, especially with the platforming sections that are already abysmal enough.
- For some weird reasons, sometime you die when there's absolutely nothing that did hit you and even then, you die likely because of the horrible programming.
- Terrible ending:' It is just a screen with the word "The End" and a background with a ship, and that it, even the Arcade original had a better ending than this but even then it's to be expected because it is a bootleg.
Reception
This bootleg unsurprisingly received extremely negative reviews by gamers and is considered to be one of, if not the worst Contra bootleg ever made and is considered to be even worse than Super Contra 2 (a terrible hack of the original), the graphics, controls, soundtrack and unbalanced difficulty we're all criticized and there was nothing praised about the bootleg either.
