Super Mario 3D World is a platform game released for the Wii U on November 21, 2013. It is the sequel to the 2011 Nintendo 3DS game Super Mario 3D Land. An expanded port, named Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury, was released for the Nintendo Switch on February 12, 2021. The game's footage is set to be used in the Nintendo Museum, which is set to be opened on October 2, 2024.

Why They're a Fury (In a Good Way)

Super Mario 3D World
  1. This game is a massive step-up over Super Mario 3D Land, with updated graphics, new power-ups, and the Sprixie Kingdom as the world map.
  2. Amazing and beautiful graphics and design for the early Wii U games standards era
  3. Three new amazing power-ups:
    • The Super Bell which is the new hit in this game which allows you to run faster, climb towards walls, attacks enemies without stomping into them
    • The Double Cherry, which is a more uncommon power up. It does create clones of you to progress into some levels when it needed it.
    • The Lucky Bell, which is basically a mix between the newly Super Bell and the Statue Leaf which not only it does keep all of the functionality of the Super Bell, but it also gives the ability to transform into a statue which immunize you for a few seconds during this time.
  4. Great controls, just like its predecessor.
  5. One of the biggest changes to his predecessor and even for 3D Mario games is the ability to play up to 4 players in the same game with Mario, Luigi, Peach, Toad and Rosalina, who becomes unlockable after beating World Star-2.
  6. Speaking of the characters, they both have unique abilities and playabilities:
    • Mario is versatile with a decent jump, speed, and sprint.
    • Luigi does jump higher but has a slower sprinting.
    • Peach has the ability to float and has the fastest sprinting but has slower speed.
    • Toad runs the fastest but jump lower and has a slower sprinting.
    • Rosalina has the ability to use the Mario Galaxy's spin attack to stun enemies
  7. Instead of Mario saving Peach again from Bowser, the game consists instead to save the Sprixie Princesses from Bowser which makes the game less repetitive. By the way, this is the reason why is Peach even playable
  8. Tons of replay value.
  9. Great platforming levels even in multiplayer
  10. The new concept of clear pipes works very well
  11. Very creative levels such as the one which the flagpole would run away, and you should catch it (called The Great Goal Pole).
  12. The soundtrack is incredibly catchy and has lots of charm.
  13. The boss battles are more creative and funnier especially the Car Bowser boss.
  14. Each world requires you to save a Sprixie Princess, and after you save one, they will take you to the next world.
  15. After beating Bowser through the last level of the World Bowser, you unlock 3 new worlds which is the Star, Mushroom, and the Flower world which is kind of similar from New Super Mario Bros. 2.
  16. After beating every level with every character, every green star, badge, and golden flagpole, you unlock a crown world with a Captain Toad level, a Mystery Box level, and most importantly, the Champion's Road which is the ultimate level.

Bowser's Fury

  1. A great standalone game which is an open world pretty much similar as Super Mario Odyssey.
  2. The new location, Lake Lapcat, is a pretty interesting idea to begin with since it is designed in an "open world" platforming style, similar to a Metroidvania.
  3. Fury Bowser's design is awesome and unique.
  4. The camera movement is dynamic like in Mario Odyssey.
  5. There is a total of 100 Cat Shines to collect.
  6. The soundtrack is catchy
  7. Like in the Mario Galaxy duology, you can play in co-op as Bowser Jr. serves to help Mario towards his adventure
  8. There are now cat variations of enemies and bosses from Super Mario 3D World.
  9. There is a new power up there which is the Giga Bell which allows you to become big enough to be able to fight against Fury Bowser
    • The Giga Cat Mario's design is epic since it already parodies the Super Saiyan sequences from Dragon Ball Z.
    • Speaking of Dragon Ball, after beating the last phase of Fury Bowser, Bowser Titan's fight and the music is really epic and is considered to be the best boss ever created in the history of Super Mario.
  10. Lots of islands to explore, as well as creative platforming elements.
  11. Even Plessie from the Super Mario 3D World adventure re-appears in this mode.
  12. Instead of having lives, you lose coins whenever you die, like in Mario Odyssey.

Bad Qualities

Super Mario 3D World

  1. The camera angles can be disorienting at times, which can be due to the Wii U not having 3D effects.
  2. During co-op gameplay, when playing with 4 characters, the camera can struggle on which character it follows at some points.
  3. Co-op players all share lives, so you can get a game over even if you never lost a life, but another player did.
  4. Unlike Super Mario 3D Land, the orange pipe is pretty disappointing, since it can only take you to the next world. To make matters worse, you can't save a Sprixie Princess unless you go back to the previous world to save it.
  5. In order to 100% complete the game, you have to beat each level as all five characters. However, this can be faster if you play in multiplayer
  6. While the last Captain Toad level is alright, both the Mystery Box and especially the Champion's Road level from the Crown World are extremely hard as for the Mystery Box while containing 40 green stars, you have to restart from the beginning if you miss one and for the Champion's Road is probably considered as one of the hardest Mario level in the history as there is no checkpoint and hard passage such as the one with speed cases.
  7. Despite having a new standalone game, the Switch port for this game doesn't have a significative change to the original Mario 3D World like a new world, new levels or even a new character

Bowser's Fury

  1. A few of the Cat Shines can be really challenging, especially in Wasteland Giga Bell.
  2. The game is short and can be completed within 5 hours.
  3. The game only runs on 30fps on handheld mode.
  4. It can be kind of boring for the second player since all they do is to support Mario instead of actually really playing it.

Reception

The game received Universal Acclaim for the Wii U version by critics and is considered by a must-play game like his predecessor. Even the users for both the Wii U and the ported Switch games who were mostly received positively due to being a significant improvement to the 3DS game Super Mario 3D Land.
