Super Pitfall is a loose remake of Pitfall II: Lost Caverns for the Atari 2600 and released to the Nintendo Entertainment System and PC-8801. Though Pitfall II: Lost Caverns is regarded as one of the best games on the Atari 2600 and the PC-88 version of Super Pitfall developed by Pony Canyon is actually decent, the NES port developed by Micronics is regarded to be one of the worst NES games of all time.

The game's infamous reputation earned it a cult following as a Kusoge (Shitty Game).

Plot

On the hunt for the Raj Diamond, Pitfall Harry's sidekick, Quickclaw, and his niece, Rhonda, become lost in the caverns. Harry's quest becomes even harder when he finds Quickclaw imprisoned in a cage and Rhonda turned to stone.

Why It Super Sucks

  1. Right as you take control of Pitfall Harry, there's a small ladder next to him where climbing down from it sends you falling into a spike pit of all things.
  2. You're given limited ammunition to use for your gun and it's hard to find more ammo.
  3. The game is very buggy and glitchy with one instance where for a split second, the Angry Video Game Nerd saw a red Pitfall Harry and another instance where he saw a green Pitfall Harry. He was able to screenshot both moments, allowing his viewers to see them.
  4. Nonsensical logic in terms of level design layout. At times, you can see ladders that don't go anywhere. Also, there’s a lake that’s anti-gravitational which the bottom of it leads to thin air.
  5. Nearly all the items needed to beat the game are hidden. It is similar to the Power Zones in E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, but it is unfairly difficult in this game because it is a much larger world. To find these hidden items, you must jump at empty air to find them.
  6. Many of the enemies are too small to hit with the gun. However, you can't shoot while crouching.
  7. One-hit deaths.
  8. Even after you rescue Harry's niece, you need to backtrack all the way to the beginning of the game and fall off of a specific ledge to win.
  9. If you win, you get a blank screen with a small block of text and an "offer to play in another world." The new world refers to another game of "Super Pitfall" with all the hidden items switched to different locations.
  10. Many ladders and pits are death traps. The first ladder you see in the game leads to a spike trap with a bat.
  11. There are large areas that require a lot of jumping to get to the top. However, there are obstacles that can not only slow you down but knock you to the bottom, forcing you to try to get back to the top again.
  12. Poor graphics.
  13. Annoying music.
  14. The only way to travel back and forth between areas is through secret warps, the most ludicrous of which is a bird enemy you have to jump into which looks no different from every other bird in the game.
  15. The only item that isn't hidden normally is the gold, which serves no purpose other than to increase your score (in the PC-88 version, gold can be used to buy items).
  16. Harry's sprites look like they been traced from Super Mario Bros. and the animations are odd. He walks like he's at 5 mph while hopping on one foot, and when he dies, he flips up and down like he's throwing a temper tantrum.
  17. In the TRS-80 CoCo 3 port, Pitfall Harry moves very slow, compared to the NES port and PC-8801 port.

The Only Redeeming Quality

  1. Unintentionally, the TRS-80 CoCo 3 port fixes two problems from the NES port, there are no glitches and load times.
