Super Why's Comic Book Adventures is a 2D animated television series based on the original Super Why! created by Angela C. Santomero. It was released on October 18, 2023, on PBS Kids.
Plot
Super Why, along with Power Paige, the newest Super Reader, save the day (and the story!) from literacy villains and other anomalies in Reader Valley.
Qualities That Should Be Erased by the Eraser
- The main problem with this show is the character redesigns are extremely uncanny, and that they look more like rejects from Hero Elementary or Rosie's Rules, which it wasn't a good sign. The worst offenders have to be Super Why himself and especially all of the villains, thus showing that Super Why! translates poorly into 2D animation.
- While switched to 2D animation wasn't a bad idea, Unfortunately, this is the case for most new PBS Kids shows, as they have switched to using 2D animation rather than live-action or 3D.
- The new plots are even more boring and unoriginal than in the original show.
- They're also very predictable too since you can easily tell that Super Why and his friends are going to save the day.
- While there are new villains, nearly each and every single one of them fall flat, with The Eraser and More Man being the worst offenders.
- Alpha Pig was seemingly removed from the main cast and presumably replaced by Power Paige because he is on vacation, which is very lame excuse for his absence.
- While likeable, Power Paige was never seen or mentioned in the original show, and she can also be seen as a Mary Sue.
- Unlike the original, the rest of the Super Readers keep getting bossed aside in favor of Power Paige, who is almost always saving the day, not to mention that she gets way too much screen time than the other characters, making them look like sidekicks than actual superheroes.
- Misleading title: The series is titled as "Super Why's Comic Book Adventures", but the series mainly focuses on Power Paige.
- The animation, while decent as done by 9 Story Media Group and Brown Bag Films, can come off as extremely cheap and lazy to some.
- Similar to Blue's Clues & You!, while the voice acting is still awesome as usual, unfortunately, Tajja Isen and Andrew Sabiston are the only voice actors from the original series to reprise their roles as Princess Presto and the Eraser respectively, whilst Super Why, Wonder Red, and More Man all got recast.
Super Qualities That Still Have the Power to Read
- Unlike most other reboots such as Thomas & Friends: All Engines Go and Teen Titans Go!, at least it's slightly more faithful to the original unlike the two aforementioned series.
- Whyatt and his friends were finally revamped for the first time since the original got cancelled, and their designs can be very cute to look at.
- It's great to see the edited Century Gothic font to return as well.
- The animation is at least decent.
- The voice acting is great as usual, especially for Princess Presto since Tajja Isen reprises her role as her, which really helps considering that she voiced Princess Presto in all three seasons from the original show.
- Delia Chambers also gives out a great performance as Power Paige.
- Jayd Deroche and Willa Scace also do great jobs voicing Super Why and Wonder Red respectively, replacing Johnny Orlando and T.J. McGibbon from the third season of the original show.
- The Mayor of Reader Valley's voice is also very good, thanks to Tonjha Richardson.
- The voices for the villains are also decent and fit each of them very well, thanks to Andrew Sabiston reprising his role as the Eraser, Dan Chameroy as More Man, Taylor Abrahamse as Outta Space, and Alicia Richardson as the Shuffler.
- While they are sidelined here, the original Super Readers are still likable.
- Despite her Bad Qualities, Power Paige is still a likable character.
- The villains, even though they are flat villains, they can be pretty entertaining. A good example would be the Shuffler, where she appears as an anti-hero as she helped Power Paige stop Outta Space from going out of control in "Outta Space is Outta Control" by spelling the word "stop" with the letters she had.
- It's great to see Super Why after seven years, even if divisive.
Reception
It has a score of 6.9/10 on IMDb, scoring slightly higher than Super Why!.
