Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: Back from the Sewers, released as Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles II: Back from the Sewers in Europe, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 in Japan, is a 1991 Game Boy game by Konami. It is the sequel to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Fall of the Foot Clan. The game was re-released as part of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection in 2022.
Why It's Back For A Great Game
- With the exception of the turtle sprite, the graphics look pretty decent and are full of details for 1991 standards.
- The game has improved the frame rate issue of Fall of the Foot Clan had and made the game even more fun.
- Unlike the first game, this one is relatively challenging and will require some skill to beat it, kind of like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles on the NES.
- The controls have been improved from Fall of the Foot Clan, and they will be highly improved in its sequel (although it's more like a Metrovania platformer than an action game).
- Fun gameplay like it's predeccesor, it's even an improvement over Fall of the Foot Clan.
- Once again, the soundtrack is great and also has a nice rendition of the TMNT 1987 series theme song.
- The game offers more variety than the first game, such as a skateboarding phase other than the hack and slash gameplay.
- If you lose a turtle in any level, you can rescue them in a bonus stage near the end.
- The game is largely faithful to the 1987 animated series, with almost the full opening in the intro of the game, which is very nice for a Game Boy game. It's also got the line Pizza Time and Cowabunga at each start of level, which sound also pretty good.
- Fun boss fight despite being difficult or too easy.
Bad Qualities
- The turtles sprite are ugly to look at compared to the first, and they look almost nothing like they were in the animated series or the first game on Game Boy.
- The story is too similar to the first game and is mostly the same as the other TMT media.
- The hit-box can be hit or miss at any time.
- Again, the game is too short, as you can simply beat it in only 50 minutes max.
Reception
TMNT 2: Back from the Sewers receives mixed to positive reviews on Gamefaqs; the game also scores an average 3.40/5.00.
