Tenkai Knights: Brave Battle (テンカイナイト ブレイブバトル, Tenkai Naito Bureibu Batoru) is a fighting game developed by Delta Arts and published by Bandai Namco Games, based on the anime series Tenkai Knights. It was released for the Nintendo 3DS on September 25, 2014, in Japan, and on October 7, 2014, in North America.
Story
The game involves the group: Guren, Ceylan, Toxsa and Chooki. The group accidentally falls through an inter-dimensional portal. When they find themselves on the other side of the portal, the group appears in another world and have assumed the mantles of Bravenwolf, Tributon, Valorn and Lydendor — otherwise known as the legendary Tenkai Knights. They fight evil to protect both dimensions.
Gameplay
In Tenkai Knights: Brave Battle, the player builds and customizes robots and then engages in combat with other robots. The game draws inspiration from the Tenkai Knights animated series.
Why It's Not Brave
- Poor grasp of the source material.
- One example would be the cutscenes. The cutscenes are filled with cheesy dialogue.
- The controls are very abysmal, making it harder for you to get used to them.
- Also, the gameplay in general is so slow as you can't even run in this game. Isn't that supposed to be one of the main mechanics of any game, allowing you to run? This game just doesn't do that.
- Generic and bland enemies.
- Cheesy voice acting that is on par with Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric.
- Annoying sound effects that will get on your nerves really fast. In fact, the sound effects never shut up.
- Speaking of the controls, the controls also suffer from framerate drops, making this game unplayable. Even worse is that this game was made a year after the anime series premiered. Isn't the game supposed to be out first before the anime?
- Mediocre graphics that look like it's came from a N64 game rather than a 3DS game released in 2014. Games like Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy, Shovel Knight, Kirby: Triple Deluxe and Super Smash Bros. for 3DS look better, and all of these come in the exact same year as this game.
- Generic and forgettable soundtrack that doesn't sound like Tenkai Knights theme.
- Nonsensical story.
- Lazy title screen and logo.
Reception
It is, as of now, the lowest-rated game from Bandai Namco on Metacritic, with a 26, indicating “generally unfavorable review”.
Hardcore Gamer gave the game a 1/5, saying "The level of pure apathy on display must be seen to be believed, with practically everything boiling down to slight variations on the first level. Combat is frustrating, stages are painfully confining, and difficulty ramps up too quickly."
