The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is an action-adventure game based on the film of the same name. It was developed by Beenox, who previously developed several Spider-Man games, and published by Activision for Android, iOS, Nintendo 3DS, Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Wii U, Xbox 360, and Xbox One. The mobile version was developed by Gameloft and the 3DS version was developed by High Voltage Software. It was released in April and May 2014 in North America and Europe respectively to coincide with the film's theatrical release. This page will cover the home console and Microsoft Windows versions.

Not Amazing Qualities

  1. The storyline is just as weak, boring, and rushed as the movie that's loosely based on.
  2. Characters in the plot appear and disappear without reason, with some characters from the movie (such as Gwen Stacy) being completely cut from the game.
  3. The arcade machine in the comic book shop is just a boring "Collect-A-Thon" mode.
  4. Very terrible graphics, a HUGE step back from the previous game. Also not helping is the fact that this was released for the PS4 and Xbox One, and somehow the game doesn't look any different from the PS3 and Xbox 360, which has even worse graphics than the previous game. Not to mention that the graphics make the game look like it was from 2007, not 2014.
  5. On the subject of graphics, Spider-Man's default suit in the game suffers from an unpleasant tinge of orange, making him look more his appearance in the Marvel VS Capcom games than a video game rendition of the movie's costume.
  6. The character models also look terrible as most look cheap, sometimes ugly, and some look like they have some sort of skin disease. On top of that, none of the characters look like their real-life counterparts from the film, especially Peter Parker, Max Dillon, and Harry Osborn looking nothing like Andrew Garfield, Jamie Foxx, or Dane DeHaan respectively.
  7. Inconsistent frame-rate.
  8. The combat system is a poor duplication of the system in the Batman: Arkham series. Clearly stated, it's a copy.
  9. Only three enemy types in the entire game, not counting boss battles.
  10. Speaking of bosses, the fight with Kingpin has a strange bug where after defeating him, he just... warps back to his chair.
  11. Boss battles themselves are disappointing, as they consist of either exploiting a single, basic pattern that never changes or ones that are interrupted by bland quick-time events.
  12. Lifeless and poorly-rendered city, like a 4-square level in a Game Boy game.
  13. For some unknown reason, in the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions, the game loads the main menu quicker after skipping the opening logos, otherwise it will load the main menu in the same time it takes to load a level in The Simpsons: Road Rage if you decide to watch all the logos without skipping them.
  14. Small world to explore, and it isn't lively.
  15. Sam Riegel is hugely miscast as Spider-Man, and tries way too hard to be funny and over the top.
  16. While the reputation meter (Hero/Menace) is an interesting concept, it's pretty pointless since nothing major happens outside of the Task Force attacking you on sight nor does it affect the story like other games with a similar mechanic like InFamous.
  17. Side missions are dull and repetitive, with the only reward for completing them being hero points and news reports from the Bugle Channel, which repeat extremely often and aren't accurate to the crime; you could be defeating enemies at night, but in the report, it'll show broad daylight. They also have problems if you choose NOT to play them and even trying to start them.
  18. If you ignore the side missions for too long (about ten minutes) you'll be considered a Menace to society, which will prompt the Task Force to attack you on sight. Fighting them all the time becomes a big chore and becomes rather annoying.
  19. To trigger a side mission, you must be in a specific location, and if you don't make it in time, it'll disappear and you'll earn Menace points.
  20. Near the end of the game, too many side missions will appear, forcing you to either grind through them or be harassed everywhere you go.
  21. The story mode itself approximately lasts seven hours, which makes the game a waste of time from the start.
  22. Disappointing final battle with the infamous serial killer Cletus Kasady/Carnage, who was the one who murdered the killer of Peter's Uncle Ben.
  23. Overall, this game is almost ruined the Spider-Man franchise in the video games media, and due to licensed expired, this game is delisting on the online game store, and it's unable to purchase the game in 2016, until Marvel's Spider Man that released by Sony, but exclusively on PlayStation 4 that later on PC and PlayStation 5.

Amazing Qualities

  1. Combat animations look cool.
  2. The controls are tight.
  3. Comic book shop contains Spider-Man comics and figurines, which should appeal to fans.
  4. The characters are still likable.
  5. It does follow the plot thread about Uncle Ben's killer unlike the movie.
  6. Variety of different costumes to collect with unique stats.
  7. Web-slinging is smooth, but not as great as "Spider-Man 2" for the Original Xbox, GameCube, and PS2.
  8. Costed less than full retail price of $40 when new.
  9. The game could probably entertain children, young teens, and/or Spider-Man fans at best.
  10. Stan Lee is in the game and is voiced by himself.
  11. The 3DS version is way better, since it is just a fun 2D platformer.
  12. Hero/Menace mechanic is a great concept just executed poorly.

Reception

Much like the film, the game received mixed reviews, with Metacritic scores of 58 for iOS, 56 for PC, 51 for Xbox One, and 50 for PS4. The game was given a 5/10 by Angry Joe.
