The Bugs Bunny Show is an animated television anthology series hosted by Bugs Bunny, that was mainly composed of Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies cartoons released by Warner Bros. between August 1, 1948 and the end of 1969. The show originally debuted as a primetime half-hour program on ABC in 1960, featuring three theatrical Warner Bros. cartoons with new linking sequences produced by the Warner Bros. Cartoons staff. It later aired on Saturday mornings in various incarnations from 1962 until 2000 when the Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies libraries became the exclusive property of the Cartoon Network family of cable TV networks in the United States.

Why It's Looney

  1. Awesome intro and ending themes.
  2. Newly produced linking segments were done for each episode by the Warner Bros. animation staff. Chuck Jones and Friz Freleng produced, directed, and created the storyboards for the earliest of these, with Robert McKimson later taking over the direction while Jones and Freleng continued producing and writing. These segments would be recycled from 1962 to 1983.
  3. Kept the original Looney Tunes shorts as part of the American consciousness for years.
  4. Amazing bumpers that shares charm with the series.
  5. Many remakes/sisters of the show that co-aired with this show, including:
    • The Porky Pig Show (1964-1967) (Although making Porky Pig's own show that took place in a barn is interesting.)
    • The Road Runner Show (1966-1968; 1971-1973 - merged with Bugs Bunny in 1968)
    • The Merrie Melodies Show (syndicated in 1972, despite being the weakest)
    • Merrie Melodies Starring Bugs Bunny & Friends
    • Bugs 'n' Daffy on The WB (aired pre-August 1948 Cartoons in 1997 due to Time Warner's merger with Turner Broadcasting System)
      • Speaking of most remakes, they utilize different bumpers and memorable themes, such as Robert McKimson's work on Wile E. Coyote/Road Runner cartoons being expanded via the bumpers in The Road Runner Show, alongside the theme of the aforementioned show.
  6. It spawned TV specials and movies, like Bugs Bunny's Looney Christmas Tales and The Bugs Bunny/Road Runner Movie.
  7. It considered one of the long-running Looney Tunes TV shows in history, lasting for almost 5 decades from 1960 until 2000.

Bad Qualities

  1. Not for preservers or historians, due to some episodes' color rips being lost, removal of original titles/endings, and the censorship of the more racist/violent moments.
  2. The only bad show that co-aired with this one is "The Merrie Melodies Show", due to Chuck Jones, Robert McKimson and Friz Freleng having no involvement in it, mainly focusing on the infamous 1959-1964 crimson color rings shorts and DePatie-Freleng & Seven Arts shorts (yes, even the racially incorrect ones uncensored), lazy bumpers and many more flaws.

Reception

  • It holds a rating of 8.6/10 on IMDB.
  • It is credited for keeping the Warner Bros. cartoons made during the Golden Age of American animation a part of the American consciousness. Indeed, the show ran for more than four decades, and helped inspire animators, comedians, historians, and others who watched Saturday morning television.
