"The Cosmo Conspiracy" is the the seventy-third episode of the anime series, Sonic X. It first aired on April 13, 2005 and April 1, 2006 in France and the United States respectively.
Plot
Shadow believes Cosmo is a Metarex spy and attempts to destroy her. Tails is compelled to keep her safe during the wild goose chase in (and around) the Blue Typhoon.
Why This Episode Should Be Killed
- For starter, it is one of the absolute worst torture episode of the whole show, and is a torture episode for everyone (especially Cosmo since she is the person who Shadow want to kill), as a result, a good episode concept was horribly wasted.
- And even if some of the torture episode such as "Sunblock Solution" and "Eggman for President" were bad torture episode for Sonic friends, they never want that far, even if in that episode they tried to kill Sonic friends for no reasons.
- The beginning in the 4Kids dub had almost no explanations about what happening because when we see Shadow in Cosmo room, Shadow said to Cosmo that she a treator instead of him saying that she will die, which is also not explained why he said that to her.
- Howewer, thankfully the French dub and the Japanese original does had more explanations and make more contexts because it had Shadow saying what he will do to Cosmo, which show that 4Kids should have not censor this show.
- This episode is extremely mean-spirited to Tails and Cosmo, at such it is as stated in the first pointer that it is a torture episode for them.
- When Chris go see what happen when Shadow is in Cosmo room, he do get brutally attacked by Shadow, and if Sonic wasn't there to protect Chris, then maybe he would be even more injured (that is, until later in the episode).
- Shadow is at his absolute worst and is very unlikable, even by his standards since he try to kill Cosmos, and for what reason ? Because she was an unintentional spy, and even if she did spy on him, it does not excuse his actions.
- He even beat up everyone, especially Tails himself who was badly beaten up, and did almost beat up Cosmos too, and in the worst way possible.
- While true, he can be quite violent at times, he never goes that far, and while yes he did beat up Sonic and his team in the Sonic 3 movie (not the web game, which howewer came out 19 years later), he did it because he though that Sonic was with the G.U.N side but he didn't tried to kill Sonic.
- Plot Hole: If Shadow remember what happened with Maria when she was shot, why does he would try to do such a thing to kill Cosmo, even if Cosmo did unintentionally spy on him ? This show that in this episode he is out of character.
- Another Plot Hole: If the emerald he used was fake, then how he did success on doing the Chaos Control to teleport right to Tails and Cosmo ? This was also never explained.
- The Japanese original version of this episode had one deleted scene about Shadow being badly beaten up because of Knuckles, and while this may had been deleted because of being possibly too violent on a kid show, it was pointless to remove since it would make a bit more senses after he lose to Knuckles, not to mention that it was keep for the French dub so it was pointless.
- In addition, it is quite ridiculous that they removed the scenes because as stated before, it could create plot holes and even then they must had forgot that Sonic did said "Shit" in the episode 2.
- Rouge does appear in this episode but howewer she mostly there for fillers and does not really contribute to the plot of this episode aside from revealing that it was her who manipulated Shadow to kill Cosmo.
- The French and Japanese titles are misleading since by looking to the title, you may think that it's an episode about Shadow suffering but in reality, it's an episode where he try to kill Cosmos, howewer the 4Kids dub had a more fitting name.
- It is never explained why Shadow doesn't want to say the reason of why he want to kill Cosmo, howewer in the ending it was revealed that it was because of Cosmo unintentionally spy on him but even by his standards, it is a pretty dumb reason.
- Shadow never got punished for trying to kill Cosmo, although Tails did kicked him off the ship for a short period of time but it was not enough and he did get back on it.
- The ending is super anticlimatic since it show Cosmo having being classified as a spy and it end like that, with no explanations, this is even the case in the other dubs as well.
Redeeming Qualities
- Sonic, Chris, Tails, Cosmos, Knuckles and Cream are likable characters as usual, especially Tails and Cosmo.
- In addition, Tails was braver than ever in this episode since he tried to fight Shadow after he tried to kill Cosmos, even though he obviously lose.
- Sonic also protected Chris from being even more injured by Shadow, and while he did partially fail, at least he stopped Shadow from possibly killing Chris.
- As usual, the animation is amazing and full of details, especially in the fight scenes, who are some of the best animated from the series.
- The title card is great, and is detailled to the point to being one of the best title card of the entire show.
- The action scenes with Tails and Cosmo are the best part of the episode and could be entairtaining, although some of them include torture scenes for both of them.
- The concept of an episode where Tails is the main protagonist and that he need to protect Cosmo is an awesome idea, too bad this episode execute this concept poorly.
- The scene where Tails state that he will protect Cosmo is great, and one of the best scene from the episode.
Reception
While the episode received more positive than negative reviews, it was still panned by fans who did found it to be one of, if not the weakest episode of the Metarex arc, because of Shadow being extremely unlikable and for the episode being mean-spirited.
