The Dress is the sixth episode of the first season of The Amazing World of Gumball.
Plot
Gumball goes to school in a dress and becomes the darling of Elmore Junior High.
Why It Does Not Deserve a Dress
- It is very stereotypical, what with Anais saying “People will do anything for a pretty girl”, which is a sexist message. We know there is some handsome boys, too.
- Darwin being in love with Gumball is creepy (especially considering the stalker-like tendencies he gets because of it), considering that they are brothers who are a family, though somewhat excusable as Darwin wasn't aware that Gumball-oops-egg-wobble-underpants from Gumball-no-wig-battle axe-ninja was Gumball disguised due to him being out of character.
- Everyone except for Anais is out-of-character. Everyone in the school somehow believes that Gumball’s alter-ego in Nicole's wedding dress, Gumball-oops-egg-wobble-underpants from Gumball-no-wig-battle axe-ninja in Europe is actually legit. Can't they add more changes like makeup or more feminine looks like a girls name or stated that "she" claimed to be Gumball's cousin.
- When Gumball is humiliated at the end, even Penny of all people laughs at him despite the fact that she loves him and later defends him for being himself in "The G.I.". Not to mention it’s EXTREMELY out-of-character as she is someone who is way too nice, caring, and friendly to do such a thing and it can really leave one with a bad taste in their mouth.
- Granted, Penny does have her moments like this, but not to this extent.

- It basically is just a fanservice episode that gives the DeviantArtists a field day.
- The ending defeats the purpose of the whole episode, where Gumball gets mocked for being naked after all he went though.
- A majority of the characters become idiotic for the sake of the plot. For example, when a dresses fell on the fire hydrant. Instead of realizing that this was Gumball all time, he just idiotic fell in love with it! Keep in mind that this is objectphilia.
- Terrible ending: The episode ends with all the students (Including Penny despite that being extremely out of character for her as mentioned earlier) cruelly laughing at a now naked Gumball who walks off humiliated and embarrassed while Darwin ends up falling in a love with a fire hydrant wearing the dress that Gumball had worn throughout the episode.
- The infamous “I want more kids!” scene.
- This whole episode would have never happen if Richard have just listened to Nicole and not done the laundry.
- Though to be fair Richard isn’t very smart which explains why he did it anyway though it doesn’t make it any less frustrating.
Redeeming Qualities
- It does have some funny moments here and there, like when Gumball was trying to come up with a fake name only to keep on ending up with his own name.
- The song "She's a Lady" was pretty good.
- As stated above, at least Anais is in character.
- In HBO Max, the episode just ends when Masami says that Gumball is naked, omitting Gumball's subsequent cruel humiliation and Darwin's attempts to romance the fire hydrant, so at least the episode doesn't end terribly there.
- The wedding dress's design is beautiful and passable.
