The Flash is an American superhero television series developed by Greg Berlanti, Andrew Kreisberg, and Geoff Johns, airing on The CW. It is based on the Barry Allen incarnation of DC Comics character the Flash, a costumed superhero crime-fighter with the power to move at superhuman speeds. It is a spin-off of Arrow, existing in the same fictional universe known as the Arrowverse. The series premiered in the United States on The CW on October 7, 2014, and ran for nine seasons until May 24, 2023. The series follows Barry Allen, portrayed by Grant Gustin, a crime scene investigator who gains super-human speed, which he uses to fight criminals, along with others who have also gained superhuman abilities.
Why It's the Fastest Man Alive
- The writing is incredible with serious plot twists like Harrison Wells being revealed as the Reverse Flash and it is revealed that Zoom and "Jay Garrick" are one and the same.
- The protagonists and even the antagonists are very likable such as Cisco Ramon who is the comic relief of the group and Captain Cold who later on becomes an anti-hero.
- Many memorable and hilarious quotes such as:
- "My goals are beyond your understanding"
- "My name is Cisco Ramon. And I am the fastest tailor alive"
- "What she means is that Hartley is a jerk, but every once in a while... he could be a dick"
- and of course "Run, Barry, RUN"
- Truly intimidating villains (with the exception of Cicada), each for different reasons such as:
- Zoom's obsession with being the fastest and being a complete murderous psychopath.
- Savitar's obsession with being the "God of Speed" and needing to kill Iris to become such.
- Reverse Flash's obsession with Barry and becoming faster than him.
- The lighting is incredibly good and solid, especially for a superhero show with a smaller budget.
- The show is often very funny with quotes like "This house is bitchin'" which became a running gag in season 4.
- The CGI in the first 5 seasons is impressive for a show with a lower budget.
Slowest Man Alive Qualities
- Despite the good writing the show can be quite inconsistent with when Barry uses his powers, but it is nowhere near as bad as season 7-onwards.
- starting with season 3 the show began to decline but did not become bad until after the crisis and never recovered reaching it's absolute lowest in season 7
- In particular: Season 3 had a perceived nihilistic tone focusing too heavily on the future death of Iris West.
- Season 4 was criticized for being too focused on comedy and the perception that The Thinker is a weaker villain than Savitar, Zoom and Reverse Flash
- Season 5 was criticized for its length, pacing and Nora's perceived immaturity alongside Cicada not being a very interesting villain
- Season 6 was criticized for the mirror monarch storyline which is considered boring compared to all prior storylines
- Reverse Flash was sadly flanderized post-season 3 into a psychopath whose only motivation in life is to make Barry miserable.
- Barry's suit in season 5 is ugly and not comic-accurate whatsoever.
- The CGI worsened in season 6, with the CGI looking like the editors spent all of 10 minutes on the CGI for the entire episode.
