The Googly Artiste is the second half of the fifth episode of the eighth season of SpongeBob SquarePants.
Synopsis
Patrick's artwork is coveted by everyone in town after an art critic praises it.
"Critique"-ally Unartistic Qualities
- In this episode, the Bikini Bottom citizens are depicted as foolish, fixating on Patrick's "art" piece, which hardly qualifies as art since it's just Krabby Patties with googly eyes attached, reminiscent of a grade school arts and crafts project.
- The episode's pacing is quite slow and lacks excitement.
- As usual for seasons 6-8, the animation is rigid, lackluster, and not visually engaging.
- It practically serves as a Squidward torture episode as he gets treated unfairly by Patrick and the art critic.
- The critic is an unlikeable character from this point. He believed that something with googly eyes on it is a masterpiece. On the other hand, he thinks that a technically true masterpiece like Squidward's artwork is worthless and underrating. Although considering Squidward vainly putting his face in every artwork may vellicate a little, as most of the time, the critics don't like him inserting his likeness into the picture.
- To those who are critics, this episode can be considered offensive, as the episode claims that critics find value in the garbage.
- Patrick becomes a jerk later in the episode toward Squidward.
- After Patrick's solicitations in the Krusty Krab but later gets off scot-free.
- Mr. Krabs is a hypocrite, he punishes Squidward for giving Patrick art advice, but Mr. Krabs only added art advice to the Krusty Krab menu just so Patrick could order it, so it was technically his fault.
- Bad ending: Squidward gets yelled at by Mr. Krabs because Patrick told him that he was following Squidward's "advice", although Squidward wanted them both punished. This leads Squidward into now being enslaved by Patrick while Patrick rakes in the cash.
Googly Qualities
- In a hilarious display of ignorant expertise, Patrick is shown to perfectly recreate real-life artworks, such as The Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh, before settling on the googly-eyed patty.
- A few funny moments, especially from Patrick.
- Nine words: "I've never seen such an example of raw creativity!"
- Squidward and SpongeBob are the only likable characters.
