The High Fructose Adventures of Annoying Orange is an animated/live action hybrid series based on the popular web series The Annoying Orange. It ran on Cartoon Network from 2012 to 2014.
Plot
The show follows the lives of Annoying Orange and his friends: the sarcastic Pear, the sassy Passion Fruit, the tiny Midget Apple, the eccentric Marshmallow, the unlucky Apple, the elderly Grandpa Lemon, and the sometimes-antagonistic Grapefruit. The show diverges from the YouTube series in that the Fruit Gang lives on a fruit stand in a supermarket called "Dane Boe's" (a reference to the creator Dane Boedigheimer) rather than in Dane Boedigheimer's kitchen.
A reoccurring character from the Annoying Orange YouTube series called Nerville, played by internet personality Toby Turner, now runs the supermarket mainly as the janitor and is the only human who can talk to the fruit.
Production
Boedigheimer confirmed that he had started producing a TV series based on Annoying Orange in April 2010. Boedigheimer finished the script for the first 6 episodes of the show in October of that year. When Boedigheimer began filming the pilot episode of the TV show in February 2011, he discussed with Cartoon Network about airing it on the station, which was picked up on November 18 of that year. The pilot episode had been completed in about 6–7 months.
There were originally intended to be 6 episodes of the show, but the season 1 episode order was eventually increased to 30 segments. Subsequently, the show was green-lit for a 30-episode second season. The second season premiered on May 16, 2013.
The show was produced by Boedigheimer, Conrad Vernon and Tom Sheppard, co-executive-produced by Spencer Grove, Kevin Brueck, Robert Jennings and Aaron Massey, and produced with Gary Binkow, Michael Green and Dan Weinstein.
Most of the visual effects, compositing, off-line, on-line, audio, RED Camera footage, graphics, and animation were done at Kappa Studios in Burbank, California. The episodes were completed in 6 days using the Adobe Creative Suite, with each episode having 47,000 frames over stabilization. 3D software such as Cinema 4D and Lightwave were also used since in the show's second season. Production for season 2 was completed in October 2013. Despite having a lot of live-action, the show is still considered a cartoon.
Why It's So Annoying
- Besides voice casting, Dane himself had no involvement with the writing of the episodes in the series. Instead, Tom Sheppard wrote most of the episodes, thus causing the writing and jokes to heavily suffer when compared to the original web series.
- It removes most of the charm that made the original YouTube series much better, suffering a similar problem to Fred: The Show.
- The mouths on the fruits can be ugly and uncanny sometimes.
- Poor grasp of the source material, despite Dane having some involvement in the series. In the web series, the fruits live in a kitchen, but in the TV show, they live on a fruit cart in a supermarket.
- Poor voice acting, mostly for Orange. What doesn't help is that Dane provided the voice of Orange, who also voiced him in the web series; here, he simply did a worse job voicing him, making it phoned-in and more annoying.
- There are various animation errors; for example, sometimes the mouths of the food disappear.
- Overuse of fart jokes and toilet humor. On top of that, the non-gross-out jokes usually consist of poorly conceived puns.
- The theme song, despite being pretty catchy, is very annoying and aggravating if anything.
- It can't keep track of its own continuity.
- Orange is, if possible, even more annoying than usual.
Not So Annoying Qualities
- Despite the bad voice acting, the voice acting by Jim Cummings and Tom Kenny is actually good.
- Season 2 can be considered be a slight improvement to Season 1.
- The theme song is very catchy.
- There is plenty of good episodes including "Welcome to My Fruitmare", the season 1 finale "My Name is Orange", "Veggie Zombies", "Bat's All Fruits", and "Thanksfornothing Day".
- Much like in the original web series, the editing for the fruit characters at least looks good.
- There are some likable characters such as Pear, Passion Fruit, Marshmallow, Little Apple, Grandpa Lemon, and Apple.
- Nerville is an absolutely hilarious character for the show mostly because Toby Turner actually enjoyed being part of the show.
Cancellation
On December 5, 2014, Boedigheimer publicly confirmed the cancellation of the series on their web series, Daneboe Exposed.
On April 24, 2015, Boedigheimer claimed that one of the main causes of the series cancellation was the shutdown of their studio, due to Collective Digital Studio closing their film and television division, and subsequently Collective was acquired by ex-Kirch media company ProSiebenSat.1 Media.
Reception
The show was panned by critics, Cartoon Network fans and most Annoying Orange fans alike; however, some Annoying Orange fans do love it. This show currently holds a 2/10 on IMDb, making it the second-lowest rated Cartoon Network show on the site, behind only Thomas & Friends: All Engines Go.
YouTuber PhantomStrider considers it the worst Cartoon Network show of all time, claiming that he has developed a habit of cutting his oranges into 9 slices "just to make sure it doesn't start squealing at me to like and subscribe to it" after seeing this show.
It was ranked as #2 on WatchMojo's Top 10 Worst Cartoon Network Shows video. It was also on the thumbnail.
