The Island of Giant Insects (Kyochuu Rettou) is a Japanese animated television special produced by Passione and based on the namesake horror survival manga with story by Fujimi Yasutaka and art by RED ICE, serialized by Champion Cross. In 2020 Passione also produced an animated film based on the special.
Plot
After an airplane crash during a school trip, Oribe Mutsumi and her classmates were stranded on a seemingly deserted island. Mutsumi found the other survivors, and used her wilderness knowledge to help them. She expects that they will be rescued in about three days, which does not seem so long to endure.
Why It Got Eaten By the Giant Insects
- Generic and cliched concept that feels like it's trying to steal the charm of every single surviving anime made.
- All the characters are very annoying and unlikable, with most of them been treated like sex objects and they all talk we cannot see them as real characters.
- The main character Oribe Mutsumi, is just a Mary Stu since she panics a lot when she any giant insect, which any survivalist should know is a bad idea.
- Ayumi Matsuoka is a Lesbian stereotype.
- Chitose Naruse is an overentitled brat that thinks it's intelligent.
- Jinno Misuzu is by far the worst character in the series, since she is a teacher that regularly has sex with underaged students, in which she would be arrested for that.
- Atsushi Kamijo is just generic and has no other personality rather than be a stereotypical juvenile delinquent.
- Mami Miura is a tsundere that groped Ayumi without her consent just to get a friend.
- Horrible and incredibly stiff animation that and looks like something from a low-quality PS2 game cutescene, but also the CGI animation used on the giant insects is much worse.
- Even through it can be redeemed by the fact that Passione has lower budget to animate the series and had to outrace into a different studio.
- This anime never SHUTS UP, and it's constantly going for 10 minutes of the characters screaming and talk endlessly, in which could give the viewers a headache.
- Disgusting and unpleasant action scenes that needlessly shoves in fanservice attempts, which serves no real purpose other than shock value.
- Uninteresting story that only consists of the characters behave like idiots while trying to survive just for the sake of plot, as even it cuts out significant things of the manga's storyline.
- There's some stupid moments like Oribe asks if they can possibly go back to their lives after the plane crash BEFORE NOTHING HAS HAPPENED. Also, after the plane crash, the only thing she's concerned about is her backpack with her notebooks, which she calls out to as if it would respond.
- There is almost no character development to the point that you can't even care if the characters die or not, an exemple is with Chitose who dies less than 3 minutes she is on screen.
- Generic soundtrack that feels off-putting in a survival anime.
- Ludicrous pacing that they were shoved in at the last minute and takes forever for them to end making them both feel tedious. This is especially the case in the beginning where there's the perfect opportunity for showing how did the plane crashed just like in the manga, but it's ruined by the squick-inducing fanservice scenes, as the anime literally begins of everyone forcing Oribe to tear off her clothes.
- The anime ended on a cliffhanger, where the characters find out that they are in a forest full of giant ixodids, but the characters never escaped and the anime was cancelled.
- The series got a movie adaption, which is just plain awful and is nothing but a full extended version of the OVA.
- The world-building is horrendous, the names of the locations aren't even mentioned, for example the island in the series is set doesn't have a name.
- Some characters look familiar to characters from other anime, like with Mami who looks way to similar with Mine from Akame Ga Kill!.
Redeeming Qualities
- The character designs are decent (with the exception of the insects).
- The voice acting is pretty good, since we got renowed seiyuus like Mao Ichimichi for exemple.
- The concept of the island having a village that's been ravaged by giant insects is a somewhat interesting idea, despise the bad execution.
Reception
Despise the original manga being somewhat obscure, both the two animated adaptations was universally panned by audiences and critics due to it's writing, characters, animation and reliance on shock value although the voice acting received some praise.
Trivia
A Kickstarter campaign was released to give the series an English dub released in Blu-ray and a live-action movie, but these campaigns failed due to series's negative reception.
