The Lost World: Jurassic Park (or Jurassic Park II: The Lost World or just Jurassic Park II) is a 1997 American science fiction adventure film and the second installment in the Jurassic Park film series. A sequel to 1993's Jurassic Park and loosely based on Michael Crichton's 1995 novel The Lost World, the film was directed by Steven Spielberg and written by David Koepp. The film stars Jeff Goldblum, returning as the chaos-theorist and eccentric mathematician Ian Malcolm, Julianne Moore, Pete Postlethwaite, Vince Vaughn, Vanessa Lee Chester, and Arliss Howard.

Plot

Four years after the events of Jurassic Park, John Hammond (Richard Attenborough) summons chaos theorist Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum) to his home with some startling information -- while nearly everything at his Jurassic Park had been destroyed, his engineers happened to have a second site, where other dinosaurs were kept in hiding. It seems the dinosaurs on the second island are alive and well and even breeding, and Hammond wants Malcolm to observe and document the reptiles before Hammond's financiers can get to them.

Why Something Has Survived (Good Qualities)

  1. It's a decent follow up to the first film, especially compared to its later sequels, even though it may not be as good as the first movie.
  2. Once again, Steven Spielberg at least, still gave amazing direction.
  3. It stays faithful to the 1995 of the same name, though it was less than the original.
  4. The CGI of the Dinosaurs, especially for T-Rex is still amazing at best, and the special effects for the dinosaurs, especially the animatronics that still hold up today, and even so, The dinosuars gave even more well development.
  5. Great action sequences, such as escaping from the vehicle from the cliffhanger, which it is very suspenseful, while.
  6. The visual effects just like the first movie, are still awesome as usual it is.
  7. Despite Alan Grant doesn't appeared in this film, Dr. Ian Malcolm makes a welcome return to the sequel, after he appeared in the first film.
  8. Decent acting, especially for the Jeff Goldblum and the newer casters, despite some characters were not too good.
  9. The idea of having a sequel, of having rather than taking place in Isla Nublar, the sequel takes place in Isla Sorna, which is a good idea. This area has a lot of abandoned places, dinosaurs, etc., and this is a great title for "The Lost World", even so with the novel itself.
  10. Decent pacing that is still purposeful and taut from the first movie, considering the film is 2 hours and 9 minutes long.
  11. The cinematography is still as amazing as the first movie.
  12. It still does have rooms of suspense, and even scares, and it still has the darker, and suspenseful tone from the first movie, and even has creepy deaths throughout the movie.
  13. The soundtrack that was performed by the legendary John Williams still has thrilling, and sometimes beautiful score, and not only that, it's still amazing as it the way it is.
  14. It is the T. Rex, who is scary, and this T-rex still terrified many people, much like the first film, such as the scene where a T-Rex goes to the tent and scaring the characters and they tried to escape, though not as scary as the first film.
  15. The T. Rex's rampage through San Diego near the end of the movie was pretty awesome.

Bad Qualities That Didn't Survive

  1. Even though the sequel is decent, the film sometimes can turn the awe-inspiring Jurassic Park film into a generic by-the-numbers "run away from dinosaurs" movie.
  2. A boring dialogue about the father-daughter relationship.
  3. Some of the character developments aren't as good as they used to be in the first movie.
    • Jeff Goldblum's character Ian Malcolm went from a wise-cracking comic relief to a boring father who doesn't contribute much to the story.
    • Kelly's better than most of the other characters, but she barely contributes to the story and is the typical kid-appeal character.
    • Sarah Harding in particular is a very annoying character and a total idiot despite being a self-proclaimed paleontologist.
  4. The writing can be extremely awkward at times.
  5. In addition, some of the elements from the novel are missing, and don't even appeared in this film at all.
  6. The first half of the movie, before the suspense came to our movie, can be very boring at times, compared to the original.
  7. Alan Grant doesn't return, although he would come to do so in the third movie.
  8. There's an infamous scene where Roland tries to shoot the dinosaur that's killing people, only for him to realize he doesn't have any bullets. Yet once the main characters go on the helicopter, Nick drops the bullets onto the ground saying "That's one souvenir they won't be taking with them", meaning he stole Roland's bullets, a.k.a the bullets that he could have used to kill the dinosaur with. This means Nick got multiple people killed for this.
  9. The pacing isn't good at times.

Reception

The Lost World: Jurassic Park received mixed reviews from critics where they praise the visual effects and made a negative comparison to the first film. It received a 53% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 79 reviews with an average rating of 5.6/10 and the website's critical consensus reads: "The Lost World demonstrates how far CGI effects have come in the four years since Jurassic Park; unfortunately, it also proves how difficult it can be to put together a truly compelling sequel." Metacritic gives the film a rating of 59 out of 100 based on 18 critics, CinemaScore gave the film an average grade of "B+" on an A+ to F scale, and it received an 6.5/10 from IMDb.

Steven Spielberg, who returns as director, expresses his disappointment with the film on how it turned out, stating that he had become increasingly disenchanted with the film during production.

The movie however received positive reviews from fans, with many praising the cast, suspense sequences, and being a different tone that the first movie. But some fans felt the movie deviate from the original source material and claim it was just a remake to Arthur Conan Doyle's The Lost World.
