The Masked Singer is an American reality singing competition television series that premiered on Yes TV on January 7, 2018.
Why It Should Keep the Mask On
- Quantity Over Quality: For a show that's been on for 6 years, it already has 10 seasons and 122 episodes as of now. This quantity-over-quality formula may also remind people of Survivor, seeing as how both get two seasons a year.
- Much like American Idol, the series panders to the masses and has singers compete to become the newest indentured servants to the RIAA while attempting to make other naive singers aspire to the same. The Masked Singer is part collective effort to perpetuate a shallow, one-dimensional view of music. The titular masked singers tend to only be able to carry tunes through a "verse, chorus, verse"-structured pop song.
- The celebrities (known as the "Masked Singers") only sing pop and mainstream rock songs. Most of them can't even sing.
- Both the format and the eliminations are bad and completely nonsensical.
- We would also like to mention that this shows how biased they are, just like the Academy Awards.
- Many people might not recognize these celebrities, given how there are 22 celebrities these seasons. The series was doomed to fail from the start!
- Some performances are laughably awful, such as the one by Polar Bear, which people consider to be even worse than other Masked Singer contestants (that aren't from Season 8-present) like Gremlin.
- Regardless of how we feel about this performance, we're not saying that Grandmaster Flash (Polar Bear) is a bad singer, it just wasn't a good song choice. And if you didn't know this already, he is also rap's earliest technical pioneers, which is an amazing achievement.
- Each singer wears a costume so that the winners only win based on their looks rather than on their talent. Some costumes are just ok; however, the same could be said for The Masked Singer (Seasons 1-7). But some are laughable, such as Wolf. Speaking of the costumes, they can be very creepy at times, such as Donut and Anteater from season 10.
- While this has nothing to do with the show itself, they have done NFTs, which proves that they're sell-outs.
- Season 8 introduced a new format that eliminates two contestants per episode. This format can also count as "jumping the shark".
- Some celebrities unfairly lose, more so after the introduction of the format from season 8 to season 9. The biggest offender of this is Mustang losing to Medusa, despite many people preferring Mustang over Medusa, and even calling Medusa's performance not as good as Mustang's.
- To make things even worse, in the season finale, Medusa won this season instead of Macaw. Many fans were outraged by this decision as much as Mustang being robbed.[1]
Redeeming Qualities
- There were some good reveals and popular celebrities, such as Dick van Dyke, Demi Lovato, and Amber Riley.
- Some good costumes are well-made, with examples of that being Squirrel, Gnome, and Harp.
- In Season 8, Harp gave some amazing performances, despite everyone knowing it was Amber Riley and the fact they dragged it on for so long because of the new format introduced.
- Thankfully they introduced a new format for Season 10 called "Rumble".
Reception
The Masked Singer has received mixed reviews from critics and audiences alike, giving it a 5.9/10 on IMDb. Many people criticized the show for how rigged it was. Many fans of The Masked Singer also criticized the season 8 - season 9 era of the show for its formula.
Trivia
