The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog is a 2023 mystery/point-and-click PC exclusive game released on 31st March 2023, to coincide with 2023 April Fool's Day, as an April Fool's joke, which happens to be an actual Sonic game.

Hence the game's name and genre, this game is about the player playing as an unnamed quokka (which they name) who has to work with and investigate Sonic's friends in a murder mystery game and try to find out who "killed" a suspect, that being Sonic himself.

Synopsis

It's Amy Rose's birthday, and she's hosting a murder mystery party on the Mirage Express! When Sonic the Hedgehog becomes the game's victim, everyone is off to get to the bottom of things. However, something feels a bit off - is this really an innocent game or is something more sinister afoot?

Why It's Far From Being Murdered

  1. The idea of Sonic the Hedgehog being "killed" in a Sonic game and investigating his murder is a really interesting and creative way to make an April Fool's joke related game.
  2. Surprisingly, this game is completely free, despite lasting for at least 3 hours before completion and all the work needed to create the game.
  3. All the old characters and the new ones are as always, a real treat to communicate with and look at, especially since they perform their roles in the mystery game really convincing and well.
    • The fact that this game makes you physically interact with all of the characters with your avatar character makes it feel like you actually are talking with them. This would make some players think that they're in a dream-come-true type of situation.
    • Also, naming the main character is very special due to how well the game is able to use the placeholder's name at every single necessary time.
    • All the characters also have multiple cool-looking (almost perfect) pixel shapes and creative dialogue to show different emotions and body language rather than a single shape the whole way through.
  4. The gameplay is really easy to get used to and understand. There's gimmicks and material such as an investigation inventory, clickable clues/items, many dialogue boxes, interrogation, mini-game platformer levels etc.
  5. Interestingly, this game doesn't require loading screens to load save files at all. It just immediately takes you to your saved progress.
  6. The game's story contains some subplots along with the main plot to prevent the game from being too repetitive.
    • One example of this is the heist of stealing the Faberge Chao Egg in the Casino Car stage.
  7. Also, after finding out the "murderer", which is revealed to be Espio at the end of the mystery game, the game then reveals that the Mirage Express train is a huge Badnik that plans to take the heroes to Eggmanland, so it can receive a reward from Eggman. This is a really interesting plot twist since the train seemed very normal at first, but then it turned evil and tried to stop the Conductor from retiring and leaving from his job.
  8. The final boss, against the Mirage Express, is really fun and satisfying with all of the attacks, traps, rings and the challenging level design. It also improves from the final boss of the previous Sonic game.
  9. If you don't want to do the mini-game stages or just don't feel like doing them, you can turn on "Invincibility" on the 'Options' menu so that you can focus on the main story.
  10. There are cameos of Sage, Metal Sonic, Orbot and Cubot during the ending cutscene of the game.
  11. Some of the dialogue from the normal Sonic characters either reference previous games or mention a few interesting and funny things that the characters went through off-screen.
  12. The soundtrack as always fits with the mystery, climatic, and intense scenes of the game.
  13. All the overwhelming positivity of this game is a major surprise to many players, especially since it was meant as a joke and some people thought it'd be bad, but it was actually an outstanding Sonic game which went beyond expectations and impressed so many people. This game could possibly be called "The current best Sonic game of all time".
  14. Despite not being a perfect game (only a couple of things that certain players could question), there are no bad qualities to this game overall.
