The New Adventures of Aladdin (french: Les Nouvelles Aventures d'Aladin) is a French film directed by Arthur Benzaquen and released in 2015.
The shoot lasted two and a half months. It took place in Morocco in the city and plain of Ouarzazate. During filming, there was flooding, extreme heat and sandstorms. The team also played in Galeries Lafayette and in a studio in Belgium
On Christmas Eve, Sam and Khalid are dressed as Santa Claus in the Galeries Lafayette, hoping to be able to steal everything they can get their hands on. Unfortunately for him, Sam is cornered by children aged 6 to 10 who asks him to tell them a story, that of Aladdin. He then decides to tell it but in his own way
Why It Sucks
To let the cat out of bag: The idea of doing a live-action reboot of Aladdin (even if it's not a terrible idea) was an absolutely despicable idea because Kev Adams (universally criticized actor) is the star in this film.
The concept of the film is that Sam, a thief disguised as Santa Claus starts telling the story of Aladdin to children, although this concept is rather decent, it is very badly executed because the children control the story and because of this, when for example someone is about to die, he does not die due to the request of a child.
It steals the concept of Asterix & Obelix: Mission Cleopatra, from the atmosphere to humor but largely fails from start to finish.
The acting of almost all the characters alternates from mediocre to downright terrible even from actors like Jean-Paul or Michel Blanc
The film suffers from literally unlikable and charmless characters:
The main protagonist Aladdin is a selfish, petty and pretentious thief who thinks only of his interests in addition to being homophobic.
Shalia the princess is a huge, capricious Mary Sue who thinks only of her interests and her ego.
The worst part is that her only friend is threatened with death if she goes outside, something she does multiple times.
Khalid, Aladdin's best friend is arrogant and literally betrays his best friend to avoid getting into trouble.
The Vizier is a generic villain with a generic purpose who is an unfunny, charmless version of Jafar and beheads people who cut him off.
The humor is awful and is made up of toilet humor, jokes that fall flat because they are predictable due to music that stops when it's supposed to be funny and racist, sexist, misogynistic and homophobic jokes in a film rated for all audiences!
Some special effects are terrible and badly done, especially the magic carpet scenes.
Lots of useless references to pop culture such as Star Wars, Back to the Future or Disney's version of Aladdin.
The film practically harmed careers, in particular that of Anais Delva, who ended her career by doubling in terrible series such as Les Sisters or Les Legendaires.
Useless cameos such as La Fouine or Cyril Hanouna (who is even more useless).
The film contains music titled Yallah Yallah which is just terrible and contains abject and poorly worded lyrics.
Speaking of music, the film has a soundtrack titled "Prince Aladdin" sung by Kev Adams and Black M which is not much better and which ruined the film even more.
Despite its Bad Buzz, the film spawned a sequel called Alad'2 which isn't much better or even worse than the first.
Overall, in the same way as Cuties, this film, in addition to being bad, gave a catastrophic image of French cinematography and because of this film, its sequel, Cuties, Taxi 5, Asterix and Obelix: God Save Britannia, Bad Buzz, Le Baltringue, Billy & Buddy and its suite, Les Profs and its suite, the Tuche quadrilogy, Halal Police d'etat, The Visitors: Bastille Day or Pas très normal activités, many people think that French films are terrible while there are good films such as Polisse or The Untouchables.
Redeeming Qualities
Despite some terrible acting, William Lebghil does a great job voicing Khalid.
Some special effects are rather successful, especially the animation of the bottom of the genius.
The decorations are well-designed and well-done.
At least the ending is decent and quite moving.
Reception
The New Adventures of Aladdin has been universally slammed by critics as well as audiences. On IMDb, it has a rating of 4.8/10, on SensCritique, the film has an average rating of 2.6/10 from approximately 9,300 users, and on Allociné, the film has a rating of 2.8. /5 for 14 press reviews and 1.4 /5 for viewers.
The film is often considered one of the worst French films that ever existed.
LinksTheSun gave the film a 2.5/20 criticizing the film for being discriminatory.
