The New Norm is an American adult animated sitcom released on X (formerly Twitter). Currently, only the pilot was released on Twitter.
Plot
A man named Norm deals with "wokeness" and egregious liberal bashing soon follows.
Why it Ain't the Same as the Old Norm
- Like Mr. Birchum, the concept of a show with far-right and ultraconservative propaganda that was only made out of spite, regarding internet culture wars is a horrendous idea. Even worse, this show is more blatant in dealing with "wokeness." They seem to hate liberals, comparing them to woke propaganda, yet this show is conservative propaganda, making this show hypocritical.
- Not to mention that it's another generic adult animated show with nothing new to add to the table.
- Like in the abovementioned show, most humor is based on strawman arguments.
- It appears to be a clone of All in the Family, as Norm is blatantly copied from Archie Bunker. This is also blatantly missing the point, as the latter character was meant to be the one who had to learn to overcome his old-fashioned, bigoted ways.
- Just ten seconds into the pilot, the show already deals with its first sign of "wokeness" in the form of a rainbow-colored beer can. Heck, even the "woke" aspect in "Welcome Back, Birchum!", the first Mr. Birchum episode, is introduced later.
- Several eagle-eyed viewers noticed that the beer Norm drinks isn't beer, it's root beer (which is a non-alcoholic beverage). And if you look closely at the nutritional label, you can see what they're talking about.
- The show even pokes fun at Disney, by having Norm's wife with tickets to Disney World that say, "Deez Nuts." While Disney isn't very ethical regarding their business, they can at least make better shows than this one.
- Many unlikable characters.
- Aside from being an Archie Bunker clone, Norm himself is an unlikable cynical character. He is horrible to his daughter's lover, Chaz, a non-binary teenager, complete with name callings, most notably "pronoun".
- In addition, he's under house arrest due to making threats against Chloe's school board.
- Norm's boss Charlie only exists as the form of a token black right-winger, who has next-to-no personality other than to be pictured as a "yes man" for Norm, who always agrees with him on anything. He gets to his worst when he calls Chaz out for not drinking beer, even though they aren't of the legal drinking age.
- The other characters aren't any better.
- Aside from being an Archie Bunker clone, Norm himself is an unlikable cynical character. He is horrible to his daughter's lover, Chaz, a non-binary teenager, complete with name callings, most notably "pronoun".
- Shockingly terrible voice acting, even for that of an adult webshow.
- Although the character designs are decent, the animation is stiff and awful, which is surprising considering the fact this was animated on Blender.
- The show treats Chaz like they're part of some government conspiracy to turn "anti-woke" people into accepting people, which is outright ludicrous and a complete lie. Not to mention that both Russia and China are portrayed as being part of the conspiracy, despite the fact that both countries are homophobic and transphobic.
- Quantity over quality: Despite its glaring issues, it’s for some reason getting a recent 2 episodes aiming by release per month, which is infuriating, especially given the overwhelmingly negative reception of this show overall.
- Poor soundtrack that relies on country music to show how patriotic it is.
- The theme song is AI-generated and has lyrics praising Elon Musk and his "shitpost memes," that's so incredibly out of place to the point of being unintentionally hilarious.
- The audience sound effects are overused, feeling out of place for an animated adult cartoon of this modern age.
- It has this terminally online vision of the world from a political lens, as seen from how Norm is placed on House arrest, Chaz being seen as a lefty government puppet and other similar aspects/conspiracies.
- This show is often accused of ripping off South Park at some points, so much so, that the creators even ADMITTED IT.
- Overall, this show is nothing more than pure conservative propaganda and it shows.
Redeeming Qualities
- Despite what WIATSATON #5 says, the character designs are quite decent.
- Norm getting beer sprayed in his face can be unintentionally satisfying, given how unlikeable he is.
- Chaz (despite being a non-binary stereotype) and Chloe are probably the most tolerable and decent characters in the series, which is ironically natural considering they're (especially Chaz) written as strawmen.
- The series seems to be fully animated in the United States, which is a rarity nowadays due to most cartoons having their ink-and-paint done overseas.
Reception
The show received enormously negative reviews on Twitter and has a rating of 1 on IMDb, making it the lowest-ranking show on IMDB. Memes mocking the show began popping up soon after, with YouTuber SaltyDKDan "edging" The New Norm's Twitter account.
